I want to be able to play games like WoW and HL2 on medium (or better) settings without lag. I'm building a computer and plan on getting the following: I want an AGP card.
-ABIT mobo -Pentium 4, 3.0 GHz (800 MHz FSB -1 GB DDR RAM

If you haven't baught that other hardware yet then don't. AMD is cheaper and better for gaming.
Whats your budget?

I agree, AMD all the way for gaming.
Intel is better for multitasking.

A friend told me I should go with the Intel because I will have music and various other programs open at times when I play games. Also heard from the same source that his Pentium 4 doesn't overheat while our friend's AMD does (they run virtually the same system and play DoD).

Any CPU can overheat if you don't have good case airflow or the heatsink mounted properly. I don't have any problems multitasking with my AMD64 3000+(I have it overclocked 500MHz at 1.42v and my cpu won't get over 44c while stressing it for hours, which creates more heat than playing games, with the stock heatsink).
Go with a AMD X2 3800+ or an Opteron 165, both are dual cores and will out perform any Intel in the same price range.
Whats your price range? Are you building an entire system with case, PSU(will need a decent one) HArd drive, etc?

On windows intel and amd are basicly the same for multitasking because windows doesn't use hyperthreading very well.

That is ridiculous. Proper system design prevents overheating. Your buddy with the AMD has too small a case or CPU fan or possibly an airflow problem. That is due to poor planning. Just get an Nvidia 7800 video card and that will be sufficient.

A 7800 seies card would be nice, but you would be bottlenecking it with a P4 3GHz.

Haven't bought anything. I'm going to get it at once or close to each other. Here's what I have at this point:
-Case w/ power supply ($38) -2528 MB RAM sticks (about $50 each) -ABIT mobo ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813127155 - about 100 dollars) -Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz 800MHz FSB (188 dollars) -MAYBE this x800: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102492 - 289 dollars
I'm keeping my old hard drive.

Get this CPU instead http://www.us.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=16993&vpn=ADA3200CGBOX&manufacture=AMD
Ram - this stuff isn't for overclocking, but if you use a divider you should still be able to get decent speeds from it. http://www.us.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=9821&vpn=VS1GBKIT400&manufacture=CORSAIR
Motherboards this one if you don't plan on overclocking will be ok. http://www.us.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=14268&vpn=A8N-E&manufacture=ASUS
if you want a good overclocking motherboard get this http://www.us.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=13825&vpn=LP-UT-NF4-ULTRA-D&manufacture=DF
Video Card - The x800 GTO2 has the same core as faster x850's and can easily be flashed to a x850 XT PE(which is a VERY nice performance gain) If you decide on this card let me know And I'll find a very easy step by step of how to do it. http://www.us.ncix.com/products/index.ph...acture=SAPPHIRE
But, if thats something you wouldn't want to do this card will be good too http://www.us.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=16724&vpn=256-P2-N386-AX&manufacture=eVGA
This is from another post I made for somebody looking to build a PC
You shouldn't rely on a Generic PSU no matter how many watts it is, they are general garbage. Cheap PSU's arn't a good idea for the new hardware today, especially if you plan on overclocking at all. Look at this PSU guide http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showthread.php?t=136602&highlight=power+supply+guide
Also I wouldn't cheap out on a case. Decent airflow goes a long way with keeping your hardware cooling and increasing it's life span. I just got a Thermaltake Tsunami Dream case with 2x 120mm and 1x 90mm fans and my system temperatures dropped alot compared to my other case with none. My ambient case temperature dropped 16c-18c, my idle cpu temps dropped 13c, and my cpu load temperature dropped 10c-12c
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1389584&CatId=0 This case it pretty much the same as the Tsunami, minus a few "fancy" things.I
You should have a very nice system.

My friends tell me not to get PCI Express video cards. Why shouldn't I? That first one you posted looked nice. Thanks much for the suggestions

You'll want to purchase a better power supply than what comes with the cheap case. I've been looking to upgrade also. I would get this motherboard , this cpu, this video card, & this ram . Don't forget a giant LCD . The ram might be on the cheap end, but I've read good things about them.

This link explains PCI Express. Basically PCI Express is faster than AGP.

Your friends don't know what their talkin about. First it's AMD over heats then pci-e is no good...... PCI-e is faster than agp, by a little and pretty soon agp will be dead and pci-e will take over.

Most of the better cards don't even come in agp anymore. That's a sign to get with the times.

I think I'm going to stick with a Pentium 4 but I will get a PCI-E video card.
Radeon x800 (the card that was recommended to me by some people) costs cheaper PCI-E than AGP. Same performance though?
