Q about Straw Tek
    #517266 - 01/11/02 11:52 AM (15 years, 10 months ago)

This question may have come up previously, but I could not find any references to it...

I am using the OldTimer's straw tek, and have a little problem- I get fruits, but they only grow on the outside of the casing (between the colonized straw and the side of the container- it almost seems as though they are afraid of the casing layer (peat based casing) Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you solve it?

THanks,

-D

How thick do you have your casing layer and if you are using a clear container do have the sides and bottom covered with something to block out the light?

casing layer is no more than 1/2" thick... I am using aluminum containers. After casing the colonized straw substrate, I covered the container with aluminum foil and put it in the incubation chamber for a couple of days at 85F until I could see myceleum growing through the casing layer, then I put it in my fruiting chamber at 73F with a fluorescent light above. The fruiting chamber has approx. 90% RH using perlite. Maybe I should have let the myceleum cover the casing layer more (or less)... Should the casing layer be completely colonized before I initiate pinning? Or should I just put the thing into the fruiting chamber immediately after casing?

(the shrooms only grow at the sides whenre the substrate shrank and moved away from the walls of the container)

Interesting that you write this thread (Interesting in my life at least). I am about 2 weeks behind you in the process, same Tek. How did you apply the casing layer? Did you pack it down and possibly smother the mycelium? That is the only thing I can think of and hopefully I won't experience the same thing. I will try to keep you posted of my results however I have a bad memory for things like that. Good luck. Hope it works itself out.
