WBS "Recipe" for Ball Wide-mouth Quart Jars
    #5170237 - 01/12/06 12:17 AM (18 years, 3 months ago)

I think I may have figured out the PERFECT levels for Ball wide-mouth quart jars when using non-soaked/simmered WBS.

(Of course, first and foremost, rinse and strain your WBS to remove any fungicides.)

Fill the jar up to the middle of the B (of the word Ball), where the two humps of the letter come together, so that the bottom hump is covered in WBS but the top hump is not (when viewed from the side).

For another reference, the line under the word "Ball" is about the same level at it's highest point.

Then, add 150-155ml of water, cap it up and PC for 1.5 hours.

This procedure netted me WBS jars that were almost full (but had JUST enough room for a good post-inoculation shaking) and perfect water content.

This procedure is for newer Ball jars - I'll figure out a better WBS measurement tomrrow and post that up so other quart jars can be used with this recipe.

Looks good, that's pretty much exactly what I do, although sometimes I follow Doc's WBS Tek.

Sounds like you wouldn't germ bact endospores. So knock them up ASAP, no waiting around.

Yep. That link is the main tek that this "recipe" is based off of - the idea was to make this a 100% repeatable process by making measurements a little more exact (ie, measuring at all).

I'm not THAT concerned about the endospores - first, because I pressure cook for 1.5 hours, second because I pressure cook at 18PSI, and third because I inoculate all of my grain with LC.

Yeah, definitely - if you're using regular spores syringes and/or not PCing for long periods, your results may vary. But a lot of folks use the same tek that Oatman posted with good results.

Interesting. Get specific amounts of WBS and water, and I'll give it a go. I'm a little burnt on WBS experiments at the moment, but I'm planning an outdoor grow for the spring. A tek like this would make WBS much less of a hassle.

I'm assuming you remove the jars from the PC as soon as pressure drops, but would like to make sure. In my experience, leaving the jars in to cool or not makes a big difference in the final water content.

I definitely agree with you on that one Rahz...

After PCing some jars I let the pressure drop normally but then opened it and removed the jars as soon as I could touch to rocker weight without steam coming out. The jars are now far to dry and are not colonizing...... FUNNY! the last batch I did before this was far to WET and contaminated....... Both times I soaked the grain for the same amount of time and followed the same draining technique.

I read this after and I think it explains this problem..

I belive that by exposing them to cooler room temps even AFTER the pressure has droped will cause more water loss.

Correct. I let the PC cool enough to lower to about 3PSI, then I pupped the weight up and let the rest of the pressure drain out. Put a towel on the counter, popped the PC open, and placed the jars on the towel.

Also, tyvek was used in between the jar lids and the jar.

Do you guys bother rinsing the seed?

What type of WBS works best? I know any millet based but brand names.

I do rinse the seed, just in case of fungicides.

Any brand will work, but Agar posted the cheapest around.

I don't remove anything from mine, including sunflower seeds and other floaters.

The amount of birdseed I use is just between 2 cups and 500ml... so about 485ml.

2 cups even (473ml) will work well, though
