Tiny red spots on substrate?

For my first grow, I purposely prepared one jar with recommended moisture, one way too wet, and one way too dry. The normal jar is completely colonized in the jar with no pins, the wet one is colonized in jar and is pinning like a madman, and the dry...well...interesting story. It colonized EXTREMELY slow...so much that I decided to just birth it half colonized to just look at the mycelium because I have never seen it before. I noticed that there were TINY tiny tiny red dots in the substrate that were almost unnoticable...I put the cake in a chamber just to see what would happen, and today, about a week and a half later, it started pinning. The pins look good, but I think back to those red dots. Could this be something to be concerned with?

I think this is definately something worth looking into...I myself don't know much about growing, it is in fact my first grow, but I havent seen anything out there on the red dots. They definately arent part of the substrate, and dont seem to grow much larger than a tiny spec...so what the hell are they? The cake that I birthed prematurely had them all over the exposed substrate...none on the mycelium, though. Right now my mushrooms and mycelium are growing fine with no sign of contam or red dots (other than some cobweb that I totally pwned with some h202), but I'm pretty sure that is unrelated. Anyone know ANYTHING about these dots?

No, they sound fine. Lack of H20 and contams can slow and even halt myc growth.

I found this in my last millet experiments. I had around 20 jars. At first, I thought the red dots were just places on the millet; they didn't seem to grow for a while, so I shook some of the jars up, and not the others. The jars I shook up, the red spread rampantly. Within 4 days there were huge patches of it. In the jars I didn't shake, it took a week and a half or so but they too spread.
My first thought was these were places where maybe the millet had burnt or been exposed to the bottom of the pan. Nope. Don't know if yours is a contam or not...but mine turned out to be, just had to give it time to spread.

Yes, mine are tiny specs as well. They are all located around or very next to the outer circle of the bottom of the jar. They are rusted-red color and are only located where the mycelium is growing (which by now is almost everywhere), and does not appear to be part of any substrate. I do not want to take any chances with contamination, however, it I do find it quite bothersome that I can not seem to identify it through any common mold pictures. Perhaps, we are particularly lucky and managed to pull in a not-so-well-known contaminant? Or maybe not. The dots have stopped growing and have not progressed in the past week, yet the mycelium has continued to grow and colonize the jar very nicely. Has anyone else had similar experience with such things?

I have another jar which appears to be developing the same coloration as I described earlier. I'm going to let it go for a week or so, and see if it will spread so I can get a good picture. We'll see if it's the same.

Ok, cool. I'm interested in seeing what it will look like.

I found this post http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...b8409c01ed256c8 and the spots on this jar are almost exactly the same as mine. I speculate it could have been from the drill that I used on the lids.

No no, that is just mycelium pee. Very common. I had actual little dots on my substrate...looked like little red aphids.
