Ok.. I've got this pile of rye mixed with ph balanced peat moss - it's a kind of failed casing that seems to have revived. I made the peat moss too moist to begin with so it halted mycelium growth - that has now recovered as can be seen in the pic. Now this stuff is sitting in a big plastic tub on a few sheets of paper on top of the perlite. It smells for lack of a better word like shit *but* there is no visible fungal growth. No colourful nasties - just mycelium. So I theorise that this smell is caused by a bacterial infeciton (correct me if I'm wrong). Does that mean I can spray it with an h2o2 solution and kill off this bacterial infection without harming the mycelium?
I have another batch of jars on the way so think of this as an experiment :)

Wow...that is odd looking. Seeing as to how you say it was oversaturated to begin with, the foul smell is most likely bacterial contamination.
I don't know what to tell you man... maybe H2o2 will work...maybe not.
Only time will tell eh?

When your rye has that "greasy" look, you know it's most likely bacterial contam, and no it probably won't recover, just pitch it.

As allready said, H2O2 won?t help here. Dump it.

the reason why it won't work is because the bacteria won't be killed inside of each kernel. Furthermore, they give off metabolites that are toxic to the mycelium. Also, the pH of that stuff has probably drasically dropped...
