cold shock or not?

here is the situation...a wombat i know has two cased trays of pr's..they were originally cased in 50/50+ and had major overlay problems because it dried out (wombat is not 100% sure this is why) he then deep scratched and remoisturized and put them back in the terrarium. for the next 7 days he grew larger and larger mycelium balls or knots but 0 pinheads and it appeared overlay was still a problem..so the wombat turned up all the original casing layer and removed the larger balls and mycelium and recased each. 1 with coco fiber and the other with worm castings. these were then wrapped with alum foil and put back in incubation. now 5 days later the mycelium is about to burst through the new casing layers but it looks like it is going to be a almost SOLID sheet of myclium (wombat has never seen such a dense patch) . should the wombat cold shock this time before removing from incubation or what would a smart wombat do? also can i put them outside (protected from germs and all of course) overnight? i am in the north west US and it probably has been in the upper 30's Farenheit at night. the wombat really needs to get some mushies from his pr's so he can at least make a print and try again. please help him! thanx all.

Although I have no personal experience with the PR strain, I have heard many people comment about the strains problems with overlay, and therefore would advise you to cold-shock. From personal experience, I have found that cold-shocking strains prone to overlay helps greatly. Anyone else...

In reply to:
but it looks like it is going to be a almost SOLID sheet of myclium (wombat has never seen such a dense patch)
Hmm, I'm guessing that the solid white patch starts producing little orange blobs of liquid, then turns a lovely blue/green colour quite soon. (penicillium mould looks a lot like really thick mycelium, before it starts sporulating)

sorry for the early bump but i was trying to get some more info before i left for work so the wombat could take action. the wombat is pretty sure it is not penicilin (i'm not saying the wombat might not be wrong) but it looks and grows like mycelium. and he can see it spearing up from the healthy mycelium on the rye grain in the bottom..........anyone else have any info before the wombat sticks these suckers out in the cold?

Well, if it's jaggy looking then it won't be penicillium after all. Damn;) Yes, I would cold shock them, I had to with my PRs. Even if it doesn't doo any good, it certainly won't do any harm. Just make sure the trays are covered with something, as most people's fridges are a breeding ground for zillions of nasty things.
