Homemade filter discs test and free samples!

I?m conducting a test using filters made of Tyvek TM foil. I prepared 4 birdseed jars, 2 are covered with the polyfill lid like outlined in the Polyfill for Dummies tek, and 2 are covered with squares of Tyvek TM hold down by the rim of the lid. I?m going to inoculate them with Ecuador rye grain spawn tomorow, incubate at 29?C and report on the progress in the following days.

Construction One of the most popular and widely known applications of Tyvek? is in the construction industry, where it is used to increase air and water resistance, helping to lower heating and cooling costs in buildings and providing better protection against water and moisture intrusion. The unique qualities of Tyvek? help stop air flow through wall cavities; help hold out bulk water and wind-driven rain; and allow moisture vapor to escape from inside walls. The result is a more comfortable, energy-efficient building with far fewer chances for damage from degradation effects. Helps stop air flow?

Medical Packaging An industry standard for more than 30 years, Tyvek? is used in virtually every form of sterile medical packaging. That's because Tyvek? delivers an optimum balance of bacteria penetration resistance, tear strength, puncture resistance and clean peel, as well as compatibility with existing and emerging sterilization methods. Sounds like it doesn't let anything in, maybe including air?

Covers Because Tyvek? is water resistant, yet breathable, it is ideal for car, boat and camper covers. The unique nonwoven structure of Tyvek? protects against acid rain and salt spray by holding out more water than cotton, polyester or cotton/polyester covers; however, because it is breathable, it also allows trapped moisture to escape, helping to prevent rot and mildew. What's more, because Tyvek? does not absorb water, it is significantly lighter than other covers -- even when wet. Tyvek? is a proven shield from the sun, blocking 98 percent of the sun's damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays, and it is specially engineered to keep out abrasive dirt and dust, so finishes are less likely to become dull or stained. Allows trapped moisture to escape? Sorry, should have made this one post. My apologies to all.

I sterilized the jars with the filters on without problems. The filters withstand the 120?C of pressure cooking without visible structure change.(according to data HDPE has a melting point of 130?C). There was a difference between the polyfill lid and the Tyvek filter jars as the Tyvek jars vere easyer to shake, leading to the conclusion that more water evaporated through the Tyvek filters than through the polyfill lids, which is reasonable if you take the active area into account, that being much greater with the Tyvek filters. The jars were inoculated with each 1 heaped teaspoon of rye grain spawn, shaken and put into an incubator at 29?C.

After 2 days fresh growth is noticable both in polyfill filter jars and in Tyvek filter jars. I couldn?t tell if the growth is faster in any of them. The jars will be shaken today to distribute the newly colonized kernels and put back into the incubator.

>can you blow threw the poly-filled hole? Yes. You can also blow(or better to say suck) air through Tyvek. The polyfill lid is more permeable per area, but the area of the Tyvek filter is bigger.

Any store where you can get material for building or renovating your house should have it, it?s a pretty common and widely used material, sold on rolls of several hundred meters, but at least where I got it, you can buy it by the meter.

6 days after inoculation the jars are colonized.
If you look carefully you will notice, that the upper layer of the Tyvek filter jars has uncolonized, dry kernels on the top of the jar during the excessive gas exchange through the filter. To counteract this one should make the hole in the lid smaller and thus only partially expose the filter surface. No contamination problems were observed in jars with either kinds of filters. All in all the test was a succes, prooving that "Tyvek house wrap" is suitable for use as an filter in preparing of grain spawn.

Lo The other day while i was at work, i saw a big roll of "what could be tyvek" that had been left by some workmans who where there last week. Being brave i decided to steal the big roll. It looks like tyvek but i cant really tell because i didn't saw any real tyvek. It is very fibrous but it has one or two holes (1/2 mm), so i decided to put double layer. I innoculated two jars yesterday, one with a hole (1,5cm diameter) covered with little double-layer patch and one normal. I dont have a digicam so no pics but ill post the results. ++ Duss69

this tyvek youve used... is this tyvek like for construction? cause that stuff is almost impossible to blow through. i received 40 tyvek envelopes today from priority post. they are thinner, but just as durable as the building tyvek. i am gonna try some. single layer i currently use poly fill filter floss

I just got my tyvek for frederial mail or whatever the hell that link in here was to get tyvek enveloppes. They are much thinner, and more permeable (suttlely) than the housewrap. I am going to do some experiments with it myself. I dont immagine tyvek is autoclavable?? if it is, i might use it as a/c bags and do bulk tek..

Any new results or findings? I?ve been using tyvek at regular basis since then and I must say I?m very pleased with the results.

Anno, do you re-use the tyvek? I have tried tyvek envelopes, the only stuff I can find (unless I buy a 100m roll). The envelopes were hard to find. Anyway, I had a few jars with bacterial contam. I soaked the tyvek in a water/bleach solution, and re-used it with good results. The one thing I have found with the paper tyvek is, if you hold it up to the light, where its been on the jar it seems thinner. I don't know if this is where the jar has reached temperatures more than the tyvek can handle, so beware when re-using! It works well, no complaints here
Good luck

I thought I posted a reply to this thread earlier before I left work, but it's not here. hmm.
I had previously ordered that Tyvek Homewrap demo kit. I think that stuff doesn't allow enough air exchange. My testing left me with some gooey junk that had originally been brf and finch seed. I chucked it all. The documentation that came with it talks about how good the stuff is at keeping the cold air out of your house, so I think it's not inteded to provide air exchange.
I just picked up some fed ex mailing envelopes which appear to be the same type of material as the USPS envelopes. I'll let you know my results of this test. Going to use EQ on BRF (no finch seed).
appreciatively,

>Anno, do you re-use the tyvek?
Yes. But As you said, it wears out after several uses. I?d say I use it like 5 times, then I replace it.

Have any of you ever tried good ol' 97cent coffee filters from your local grocery store? I'm sure they're not as good as filter discs that I'm seeing a lot of or tyvek but they promote air exchange and contam filtration. In fact, I think I got the idea of using coffee filters from the shroomery a few years back. *shrug*

I had used my PC and heated the jars for about an hour.
Do you think contams were responsible?

>Do you think contams were responsible?
Well, contaminanants were responsible for sure. The question is, where did they come from. Were they in grain and survived the sterilisation? Di they came in with inoculant or air? Or did the Tyvek filters leak?
I don?t know.
In my experience with tyvek filters I?ve only had positive experience so far, tested on around 50 jars.

Hey Anno, I'm thinkin' of using Tyvek with my next experiment. I'm planning on using a varient of the PF tek. If I were to use the Ramsys' (sp?) seal with the Tyvek, would I put the Tyvek on the top or the bottom of the lid? If I put it on the top I'd have to tape the holes right?
thanks

There is not really a need to use tyvek when you do PF cakes. With PF cakes the classic vermiculite seal(not the ramsey seal) has proven best, IMO.
