Good deal. When the Powermac goes dual core Intel I'll be on it.

Cool, so now you don't need a PPC distro in order to put Linux on a Mac.

> Maybe one day we will have standardized architectures and frameworks
As long as monopolies, such as Microsoft's, continue to dominate the industry, there will be no standardized architectures or frameworks.

Not to get in a fight about whether Microsoft is the evil empire or not, it seems to me that if it was a TRUE monopoly, we WOULD have standardized architectures and frameworks...
ala Ma Bell saying back in the day "You can have any color telephone you want, so long as its black".
But, a monopoly is NOT in place, so we have all these competing formats and such, however you feel about that.

If you mean booting to a Mac OS X disc & installing it on a bare hard drive on a pc (the same procedure you would normally do with a Windows disc),as of right now, no. The hardware requirements are still going to be Apple proprietary (specifically the motherboard & possibly the optical drive). You can run OS X & older mac os on your pc through other software or emulators. I have done it on my pc & it works but there are limitations.

Actually, google it. There's been a way to instal OSX on intel systems for quite some time now.

I used to be on the intel bandwagon but then I heard about their new 'trusted' architectures. Security? Thats not what the new architecters are for, they are for DRM software, etc.

I say congrats to Apple for dropping IBM and joining Intel - afterall Intel have been pioneers in manufacturing energy-efficient short pipeline architecture processors- ideal for the likes of the MacBook. Think the name is a bit shite though - probably an attempt at a publicity stunt. Certainly the future looks bright for Apple.

Anyone have a chance yet to use the new Intel-based systems? I'm wondering what peoples thoughts are on their performance. Anyone have links to benchmarks and other such reports?

If Intel and AMD are producing processors that are what all operating systems are based upon, then voila! The Apple developers and crowd will no longer be working on PPC based software or hardware development. Thus all of that productivity will be focused on x86 - type processors. I see this as a good thing.
I agree with the good thing. However, imagine if AMD wasn't around and Intel had no real competition... things would most likely be a lot different.

Frameworks are another story. With Microsoft shoving their .NET trash down everyone's throat, Cocoa barely has a chance.
Unfortunately, correct... though I cannot yet decide if I like Cocoa or not. My STL code easily outperforms my Cocoa code... and the Cocoa library is really missing some key ADTs. However, IB is awesome and the integration of Cocoa into the dev tools is outstanding... plus using bindings turns a 200 line program into a 5 line program (literally). I haven't used .NET, so I can't fairly judge it... however, based upon it being a MS language (granted, it was stolen from Sun Microsystems)... and seeing how MS has slaughtered other languages, I suspect your adjective of trash is probably apropos.
> Anyone have a chance yet to use the new Intel-based systems?
Yes. I was using it well before it was released to the public.
> I'm wondering what peoples thoughts are on their performance.
From the user standpoint, it is no different than any other Apple computer... certainly faster than the Power PC, but such is to be expected. The only things I really miss are the RISC intruction set and the Altivec instructions. I hate trying to read Intel assembly... it is so... messy... and I love altivec compared to MMX/SSE/SSE2. For most developers, this won't really matter at all... they should be using the accelerate framework rather than hacking the assembly directly.
