Microscope purchase...

My apologee's if this isn't the correct place to post this... Not sure where it belong's.
I'm looking into purchasing a microscope. I was hoping some folks here would be willing to recommend some. I'm not all up to date with what company is any good, and which one's to stay away from. I've done some looking on ebay, and of course came across afew with warrenties, but... Stamets has one on his site, but I can't afford that type of price. I'm thinking maybe $300.-$400. would be more suitable for me. So any idea's? This is all completly up in the air at the moment. Just pondering the thought. Thx

For what purpose? If you want to study mycelium on a glass slide, you need the type offered by stamets, a laboratory microscope. Those are what we call a 'light microscope'. The light is below the object you're looking at and the lense is above it. You see an image based on the light that passes through the object. You can see an example in your price range here http://www.microscopesusa.com/student_microscopes.html
If you want to study the gills on a cap or look at the basidia, you need a microscope where the light source and the lense are on the same side. These microscopes work like a very powerful magnifying glass. You can see this type here http://www.microscopesusa.com/FD100.html
Surf around that website. They have some pretty cool stuff and good service. I've bought three microscopes and several cameras from them. RR

Is this really the case?
As far I know, you are able to see the basidia and cystidia perfectly well with a "normal" microscope. Gotta ask Workman.

Would there happen to be a combination of the two out on the market? I'd kinda like to do both really.

I'm buying one next week.
So 40x will be as strong as one needs, right? For viewing spores/mycelium/basidia.

Spores101 has them on their web site too I noticed. There happens to be a store on ebay thats selling one for $300. 40x-1000x with a 5 year warrenty. They seem to have them all the time. I guess there refurbished.

If you are just starting out, look for a student light microscope with a minimum 400x magnification in your price range. See what your local High School or Junior college is using for examples. Reconditioned is fine, achromatic lenses (which covers nearly every decent scope available) and coarse and fine focus adjustments are a must. Built in lamp (vs a mirror) is nice and an adjustable stage is helpful.
You might outgrow a student scope if you really get into microscopy and want better lenses and other features. But this should get you started at a reasonable cost.

Would an achromatic cause the same thing is it does in a telescope? Color aberration?
