Cased three jars. They smelled very good, ready to eat!
I was going to take a picture before I put the casing material
on top of the mycelia chunks, but forgot... anyway, here is a
very non-informative picture of the progress.

Forgot.. I was going to include this too. The cakes were
spongey, and smelled like dried mushrooms. The texture
was different from the loose slop that comes with contam'd
jars, very stiff.

Temps look right for this? Low 70's.... also I'm trying to
reduce humidity. HI% means it's 95% or higher.

Looking good man!!!
Yeah i can tell by the humidity on the sides of your chamber your in the high 90's
Probably 98 or 100% humidity.
Like you said....you better get the humidity down.

Nice casing. I'm impressed that you managed to get those stalled jars to work. I've had a few do that to me and could never get them to recover. I will be bolder next time and try breaking them up and adding water, thanks!

pic from this morning:
mycelia is continuing to spread but the pins that have been there for a few days don't seem to be taking off. i haven't been able to cut humidity, ive been fanning 5-7 times a day and stopped misting. the hygrometer is like that because the sensor is at the bottom which was laying right in the perlite.. the humidity is still over 95%.
i read Anno say to remove the saran wrap to cut humidity (?) will this casing be resistant enough to contams from doing that?

I was going to say just leave the lid slightly open to drop humidity and then i finished reading your post
" i read Anno say to remove the saran wrap to cut humidity (?) will this casing be resistant enough to contams from doing that? "
and do answer that. yes on both accounts (remove wrap and strong enough to resist contam unless you live in a land fill.)

lookin' a little grey... hm.
i removed the saran wrap and the humidity dropped to about 50%. i'll try misting first with it open, if that doesnt work i'll leave it half open. thanks

is that perlite the casing is on?
i'm impressed you got the jars to recover too. just had the same problem with som stalled cakes and i tried everything but alas my efforts were in vain. i got the mycelium to recoverslightly but never produced any fruits.
nice job!
in answer to your question for future reference:
<"I thought I could take a cake and crumble it into a
jar with more substrate. The mycelium already has a
dominant presence, and could most likely keep control.. this
could quickly turn one jar into two.">
sure you can do this! its called spawning.
keep us posted on your progress. i am interested to see what type of results you get.
peace!

I rather surprised that your casing sucked your humidity in the terrarium down to 50% when you removed the plastic wrap.

Well, I unexpectedly had to go away for a little over a week and was very sad to leave the casing alone with no one to care for it. I came back and was surprised to have had no contams but a lot of abhorts and a very dry casing layer. It could have been promising, but I'm overjoyed to have gotten something out of what I thought was sure to have failed. I harvested these here.
I broke the surface up with a knife and put a thin layer of soil over the old casing. I rehydrated the soil and brought humidity back up to the upper 90's. Less than a day later I see some poking through. Wonder what will happen...

ok i know you had good luck with this.... but couldnt the same thing have been achieved by adding sterile water via syringe with oven tek and you would be really safe maybe im missing something about what you did, but that seems like it would be just as good and about 1 billion times more sterile considering theres always billions of things floating in the air

It probably wouldn't have made a difference, however I didn't
keep the syringes. I also noticed the jars that I didn't break
apart the substrate in were unsuccessful, in fact both were
contaminated worse than the any of others. I don't
understand this, but that's the way it happened.
