Melted cookware
    #5159119 - 01/09/06 04:59 PM (18 years, 23 days ago)

This is/was the bottom of my MSR frying pan. I was cooking breakfast over my MSR Whisperlite stove and it leterally melted off the bottom layer of the pan. You can see two drops of molten metal on the ground. I am just glad that none of that metal fell into the stove assembly!

I haven't written to MSR yet, but hopefully they'll replace it. It's not even a year old, but I don't have the receipt and I don't live in the same place I originally purchased it.

I had just boiled some water in a stainless kettle (a part of the same cookware set), so I thought I had the heat adjusted to a sane level. I had some beefstew inside the pan and was stirring constantly (and it still charred....). As I was lifting the pan off the direct heat to stir it some more, I saw those drops of metal hit the ground.

That stove can get hot as hell! But I was right there keeping an eye on it and adjusting the gas & pressure to try and keep it only reasonable hot.

Damn that is hot!

What store did you buy it at?

Holy crap!  Kudos to MSR for making a stove that gets hot enough to melt pans, but shame on them for not making a pan sturdy enough to stand up to it!

Seroiusly, I would've never thought a Whisperlite would put out that many BTU's.  I've cooked on them quite a few times, as well as a few other types of backpacking stoves, and I never thought there was enough heat to do something like that.

wicked shit man
what kind of metal is that pot? I am guessing anodized aluminum?
That's gotta take some intense freaking heat to melt metal
I've never heard of stove doing that... maybe the pot had a defect? A bad bottom layer or something.. but I know exactly shit about how pots are made.

I've heard MSR is pretty damn good though when it comes to making good on replacing stuff that fucked up and customer service and whatnot. We shall see.. you have the true test. Out of state and a year later.. I bet they'll make good on it though.. from everything I hear. I've heard a couple stories of thru-hikers whose MSR gear got all FUBAR on the trail and they will send it in from a drop box and MSR sent them new stuff on the trail! If that's true then you should have no problem. They'll probably just want you to send them the pot as proof of the fuckup or something.

I have a whisperlite too (whisp international) ... I hope it doesn't do that to my titanium pots :crankey:

i'm assuming you were using white gas... and not jet fuel?

Thats pretty amazing man, its a shame you have to get the pan replaced now though.  I've also never thought that a whisperlite could get that hot.  I use a primus stove, and it can get pretty hot... but no where near that.  That is some crazy shit, wow.

I went with the primo titanium after that.

Yeah, it was the Alpine Gourmet cookset. The stainless bowls and kettle have held up well. It looks like maybe it's a layer of aluminum on the bottom of that pan that melted. The other pieces don't have that thicker metal layer on the bottom and they've held up well.

The reason I bought the Gourmet set I did was for the lidded kettle with the handy little pour spout. I hate boiling water in a bowl and then pouring it out into my cup or other things.

my MSR titanium pot has a little spout for pouring.. very convenient for not spilling shit all over everywhere. only downside of titanium is you can't cook it on like a campfire.. at least that's what I hear.
