nice coprinus and galerina pics
    #5158940 - 01/09/06 04:13 PM (18 years, 1 month ago)

I went hunting at a nice park here in central NC, and was surprised by the number of mushrooms popping up in January. The first few pics are of Coprinus micaceus, a really beautiful inky. The last two are of some galerinas. I find that galerinas can be highly variable when I find them - notice the wavy cap and decurrent gills of the first pic. The second galerina pic looks like some galerina flying saucers that landed on the log.

enjoy!

Nice xmush,

Deadly Galerinas are one of the most abundant of all forest mushrooms during the Fall, Winter, and early Spring. I often find them fruiting from snow covered logs. The freezing weather doesn't seem to bother them much.

I invite you to add your photos to the wiki.
Its important for mushroom hunters to be familiar with the different morphs this deadly species presents.

Thanks Dan. Indeed I see more galerinas in the winter than any other kind of mushroom. Sometimes two nearby logs can be covered with completely different looking specimens of G. marginata. For example, check out how different the gills look on this one compared to the older one I show above:

It really underscores how knowledgable a person should be before they start popping shrooms in their mouth!
