Cultivation method- suggestions/comments needed

Im going to colonize on WBS (using agar's tek) in 1 qt jars (Either Z Strain or Aussie's). Im not sure what to use as a casing layer- would shagnum moss be sufficient? How much should i use? My casing containers are aprox 6 x 9, about 2.5-3'' in depth- should i add a 2'' layer of colonized WBS and just a small 1/2'' layer of shagnum moss? Do i need a thick layer over the colozied WBS? Also, i heard a deep casing provides larger, taller shrooms.
Is this sufficient? Thanks

A thick casing layer won't do a thing for bigger shrooms, but deeper substrates will. 3-4" substrate, topped off with 1/4-1/2" max casing layer depth for best results.

Ok thanks guys. Also im confused about one part of the casing methods, after casing it i know u have to cover it and allow the mycelium to evenly cover the casing layer, but some methods i see use syran wrap, others use tin foil. shouldnt i use tin foil, keep it dark and warm, then when its even on the casing layer, lower the temp and introduce light?

Yep, that's pretty much it. I use foil with several holes poked in the top. Applying an even casing layer along with good incubation timing is the trick, you just have to find what works best for you. I like to go 48 hours @ 1/4-1/2" depth, then blast the trays with light/fresh air/light mistings.

well, when colonizing the casing layer you want to start fruiting as soon as you see the mycelium starting to break the surface. don't let it cover the top! read up on the 50/50+ casing tek, it will be much better than just a straight peat casing. another good read for ya will be hyphae's A pinning strategy....great read, ingest it and make it your very own....lol as for the saran wrap or foil, either is just fine. if you have an area that is completely dark for incubation the saran wrap will work just fine. if your incubation area has some light you should use the foil. and don't forget to put some holes in the foil or saran wrap so that you get some gas exchange during the incubation time. an important point to consider as you put the substrate and casing layer together is a nice even layer of each. try to get them as even as you can, it will help considerably. as HD already said, a casing layer ~1/2" is plenty, especially for the depth substrate you are using.
the best advice anyone could give is: READ READ READ and the READ SOME MORE.......
best of luck to ya
