How does a cake "know" when to pin?

So I birthed my first cake over a week ago, and until today I saw NO pins whatsoever...I was starting to think it was a dud or something, then today there were pins all over it! How does the cake start pinning so evenly and thouroughly instead of just a few pins showing up here and there? Seems like there is some kind of internal biological "switch" or something that just turns it on when it's ready. Anyone know the science behind this?

Lowered temps, Lowered humidity, and light. Maybe a few other things as well but those are the main things. GL

from what i've read and experienced, it is signalled to pin by the following triggers: light, air exchange and temp. congrats on pins!

Mushrooms are basically the mycelliums way of keeping itself alive. They produce fruits to spread spores so that more myc colonies can be started. Therefore fruits require certain triggers to begin their life. The main ones are temp and humidity. Light plays somewhat of a role in the cycle but is not as important as the temp range and the humidity.
Knowing that mushrooms grow towards water sources and upwards towards the light source. Once all these triggers have been met the myc. colony begins the process of forming primodia, which turn into pins, then finally into mature fruits. That's pretty much it in a nutshell, im sure you can detail it down even further if you want, but i think that should answer your questions in laymans terms.
Somebody like workman would be a good person to ask this question to if you wanted to get down to the exact terminology and processes involved in fruiting.

Myc is sort of like a female thing.
Treat it right, be good to it, give it what it needs. (Myc - FAE, high humidity, 12/12 light cycle) and when it's ready, it will PIN.
Now, females, that is a whole nuther subject. (Treat her right, be good to her, give her what she needs) And you might, just MIGHT.......get laid.
