Tyvek time!
    #5150204 - 01/07/06 10:18 AM (18 years, 3 months ago)

Using a tyvek lid, can you inoculate a jar by peircing the tyvek then covering the hold with something like micropore tape or is the threat of contamination to great? Anybody tried this?

Tyvek lid? Show me.

If you mean a canning jar ring, with tyvek under it & no metal lid?

That much tyvek area will allow a jar to DRY OUT.

Two 1/4 inch holes, tyvek under the lid then I take it? How do you inoculate then? Just peirce the tyvek I take it?

i REALLY like the idea of using Tyvek, but let me get this straight (the most advanced seal i've used is a Ramsey seal)...

JAR + TYVEK SQUARE + LID (W/ INOC. HOLES) + BAND + COFFEE FILTERS + HEAVY RUBBER BAND + FOIL (in my pc anyways) ???

is that right? you don't need polyfill underneath the Tyvek? you just stick the needle thru the Tyvek to inoculate and then tape the hole? what if you don't have a glove box?

is Tyvek the future or just a complicated, fancy seal? like i said, the most advanced seal i've worked with is a Ramsey (foil) seal...

NOTE the difference in the lids on jars 2 & 3 in the picture above.

Jar lid 2 is a 2 hole lid.

Jar lid 3, is a 3 hole lid.

Either way, inoculate through 1 hole & tape it over.

so you only use one of the holes? (my gf feels the SAME way) what about putting foil under the Tyvek? any comment there?

Can this be accomplished without a glovebox?

foil under the tyvek would defeat the purpose of tyvek. It wouldnt allow for gas exchange. Yes, use only one hole to innoc. I do just one 1/4 inch hole and a small pinhole for innoc. I prefer putting polyfill in the 1/4 inch hole as a preventative measure but its not needed.

What I guess I don't get is that how can taping over the hole in the lid, after I inoculate, will adequately cover that hole. Is there much of a gap between the tyvek and the lid?

Here's the method I use. Cut out a tyvek square large enough to cover the jar. Place a dab of RTV sealant in the center and pat it down into a coin shape with something wet. Let dry. Drill a single 3/8 inch hole in the center of the jar lid. Place the lid on the jar. Place the tyvek square, with the sealant _down_, over the lid. Screw the rim on. Inject and forget.

Gasket sealant. You can get a tube at the auto supply shop for 5 bucks. It will withstand PC temps  and comes in different colors

someone was saying he puts 2 coffee filters OVER the jar lid (lid over Tyvek) and secures them w/ a heavy duty rubberband. he said as an added filter/protection for the substrate. he also said you may wanna cover them again w/ foil to prevent any boiling water from getting in.

coffee filters are for peace of mind. I won't disuade against using them, but if something can get throught the tyvek, it's going through the coffe filter too.

rubber bands are a good idea with half pints, but if you're doing quarts they're not much use.

These opinions are from my limited experience and reading
