Father of LSD turns 100

Father of LSD nears the century mark
By Craig Smith, The New York Times

Scientist calls drug 'medicine for the soul'

BURG, Switzerland -- Albert Hofmann, the father of LSD, walked slowly across the small corner office of his modernist home on a grassy Alpine hilltop here, hoping to show a visitor the vista that sweeps before him on clear days. But outside there was only a white blanket of fog hanging just beyond the crest of the hill. He picked up a photograph of the view on his desk instead, left there perhaps to convince visitors of what really lies beyond the windowpane.

Mr. Hofmann will turn 100 on Wednesday, a milestone to be marked by a symposium in nearby Basel on the chemical compound that he discovered and that famously unlocked the Blakean doors of perception, altering consciousnesses around the world. As the years accumulate behind him, Mr. Hofmann's conversation turns ever more insistently around one theme: man's oneness with nature and the dangers of an increasing inattention to that fact.

"It's very, very dangerous to lose contact with living nature," he said, listing to the right in a green armchair that looked out over frost-dusted fields and snow-laced trees. A glass pitcher held a bouquet of roses on the coffee table before him. "In the big cities, there are people who have never seen living nature, all things are products of humans," he said. "The bigger the town, the less they see and understand nature." And, yes, he said, LSD, which he calls his "problem child," could help reconnect people to the universe.

Rounding a century, Mr. Hofmann is physically reduced but mentally clear. He is prone to digressions, ambling with pleasure through memories of his boyhood, but his bright eyes flash with the recollection of a mystical experience he had on a forest path more than 90 years ago in the hills above Baden, Switzerland. The experience left him longing for a similar glimpse of what he calls "a miraculous, powerful, unfathomable reality."

"I was completely astonished by the beauty of nature," he said, laying a slightly gnarled finger alongside his nose, his longish white hair swept back from his temples and the crown of his head. He said any natural scientist who was not a mystic was not a real natural scientist. "Outside is pure energy and colorless substance," he said. "All of the rest happens through the mechanism of our senses. Our eyes see just a small fraction of the light in the world. It is a trick to make a colored world, which does not exist outside of human beings."

He became particularly fascinated by the mechanisms through which plants turn sunlight into the building blocks for our own bodies. "Everything comes from the sun via the plant kingdom," he said.

MR. HOFMANN studied chemistry and took a job with the Swiss pharmaceutical company Sandoz Laboratories, because it had started a program to identify and synthesize the active compounds of medically important plants. He soon began work on the poisonous ergot fungus that grows in grains of rye. Midwives had used it for centuries to precipitate childbirths, but chemists had never succeeded in isolating the chemical that produced the pharmacological effect. Finally, chemists in the United States identified the active component as lysergic acid, and Mr. Hofmann began combining other molecules with the unstable chemical in search of pharmacologically useful compounds.

His work on ergot produced several important drugs, including a compound still in use to prevent hemorrhaging after childbirth. But it was the 25th compound that he synthesized, lysergic acid diethylamide, that was to have the greatest impact. When he first created it in 1938, the drug yielded no significant pharmacological results. But when his work on ergot was completed, he decided to go back to LSD-25, hoping that improved tests could detect the stimulating effect on the body's circulatory system that he had expected from it. It was as he was synthesizing the drug on a Friday afternoon in April 1943 that he first experienced the altered state of consciousness for which it became famous. "Immediately, I recognized it as the same experience I had had as a child," he said. "I didn't know what caused it, but I knew that it was important."

When he returned to his lab the next Monday, he tried to identify the source of his experience, believing first that it had come from the fumes of a chloroform-like solvent he had been using. Inhaling the fumes produced no effect, though, and he realized he must have somehow ingested a trace of LSD. "LSD spoke to me," Mr. Hofmann said with an amused, animated smile. "He came to me and said, 'You must find me.' He told me, 'Don't give me to the pharmacologist, he won't find anything.' "

HE experimented with the drug, taking a dose so small that even the most active toxin known at that time would have had little or no effect. The result with LSD, however, was a powerful experience, during which he rode his bicycle home, accompanied by an assistant. That day, April 19, later became memorialized by LSD enthusiasts as "bicycle day."

Mr. Hofmann participated in tests in a Sandoz laboratory, but found the experience frightening and realized that the drug should be used only under carefully controlled circumstances. In 1951, he wrote to the German novelist Ernst Junger, who had experimented with mescaline, and proposed that they take LSD together. They each took 0.05 milligrams of pure LSD at Mr. Hofmann's home accompanied by roses, music by Mozart and burning Japanese incense. "That was the first planned psychedelic test," Mr. Hofmann said.

He took the drug dozens of times after that, he said, and once experienced what he called a "horror trip" when he was tired and Mr. Junger gave him amphetamines first. But his hallucinogenic days are long behind him.

"I know LSD; I don't need to take it anymore," Mr. Hofmann said. "Maybe when I die, like Aldous Huxley," who asked his wife for an injection of LSD to help him through the final painful throes of his fatal throat cancer.

But Mr. Hofmann calls LSD "medicine for the soul" and is frustrated by the worldwide prohibition that has pushed it underground. "It was used very successfully for 10 years in psychoanalysis," he said, adding that the drug was hijacked by the youth movement of the 1960's and then demonized by the establishment that the movement opposed. He said LSD could be dangerous and called its distribution by Timothy Leary and others "a crime."

"It should be a controlled substance with the same status as morphine," he said.

Mr. Hofmann lives with his wife in the house they built 38 years ago. He raised four children and watched one son struggle with alcoholism before dying at 53. He has eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. As far as he knows, no one in his family besides his wife has tried LSD.

Mr. Hofmann rose, slightly stooped and now barely reaching five feet, and walked through his house with his arm-support cane. When asked if the drug had deepened his understanding of death, he appeared mildly startled and said no. "I go back to where I came from, to where I was before I was born, that's all," he said.

Hmmmm....well...I dont know.

Running around with a powerfull LSD solution and dosing random people in a random fashion just in their request to try it ,while preaching more or less "Buddhahood" can be slightly dangerous. What happened to set and setting?

Certainly NOT the best publicity stand that could bring on benefits to psychedelic research

Now hey.

It was definately no "crime" to distribute LSD, (if we're talking about "crime" as defined as something that hurts someone instead of the usual "whatever the legislature says is a crime is a crime" definition of "crime".)

As far as set and setting goes, if LSD were completely legal and no crime, it would be one hell of a lot easier to find a good setting in the first place.

It is the condition of the world which is the aforementioned, and current danger.

It is people's biased, and un-informed attitudes about LSD which is extremely dangerous.

It is the fact that our governments (supposedly representing the will of the people) are willing to use violence if nescessary, and use violence often in order attempt to control us even so far as what we choose to put into our own bodies that is "dangerous".

LSD is not dangerous any more than a hammer or other tool is, but it does tend to expose the true dangers that I mentioned. (That we are being controlled)

So that's why they don't like it.

LSD was not illegal since the first synthesis of it. It had to go around a bit,be a bit widespread before getting banned.

What is set and setting?

-Hey ,is this a safe and cool enviroment?
-ummm...yes Mr Leary
-You feeling ok?
-Well ,yes
-Ok ,open your mouth...Theeeere you go.

If one considers set and setting the above (a relatively safe enviroment and feeling just ok) then he is running LSD on "minimum requirments".Unfortunatelly some people think that LSD is instant enlightement, instant solution to everything "Just swallow it and it works". Mr Leary was a bit reckless to the distribution of such powerfull psychoactive,he was a bit too "happy go lucky" to undertake such a task which requires huge responsibility.

Look at it also another way.The danger from LSD doesnt originate from "booing" of society ,or policemen running after you.Thats a danger we ,as a society have imposed on it. LSD dangers lurk for the unprepared victim (because if one is unprepared becomes a victim ) in its inherent property to grab everything you know, your worldview, who you are, what you believe ,turning it upside down.ripping it and reforming it and during this you being fully aware and conscious to behold the sight! Of course here we dont speak about "1 blotter dosages" which would make ones curtains a bit wavy and the music to sound meaningfull ,maybe some fractal on the walls. We speak of dosages along the line of 250-500 ,even 1000 micrograms...

A "crime" can be a crime even if the "criminal intent" of the one who carries it out is non-existent.Simply he might have not know what he was doing, just going about doing it in a happy go lucky manner. Now,if someone was hurt or not thats a big story. Personally i wouldnt run aroung giving a powerfull solution of almost the most potent psychedelic known to man to anyone who would ask to receive some. If not anything else, the receiving end might spend 12 hours of a hellish experience that could lead to emotional trauma...Mr Leary;s image is glamorized alot...If you familiarize yourself more with him then you might come to the conclusion that maybe he was not the most appropriate candidate of introducing LSD to the world

Anyway, i wish the role of Mr Leary was undertaken from someone with less hunger for media and more responsible....Maybe we would all be better of if it was left on the hands of Hoffman and Stanislav Groff...Dont worry,LSD would still be aroun (if the only question that bothers us is if it would be available to the "mere mortal").

And personally I wouldn't run around denying a powerful solution of almost the most potent psychedelic known to man to someone who had asked to recieve some.

Who am I to judge who should recieve and who should not recieve?

Its as what you present the psychedelic experience as.Keep in mind that when Leary bloomed knowledge about this material was not widespread as it is today. For example today you know at least of 2 big informational websites to get your facts on LSD right, plus lots of forums to discuss about them.If one gets more investigative the library can have lots of books on it. At 60's people didnt have the informational access we have today.

Leary used to advertise it as "instant buddhahood" (that also the reason he got kicked out of uni from his position). So one could say that if a smart man approached you talking to you about achieving enlightment and becoming buddha like if he just squirts some of this liquid in your mouth, few people would decline.Problem is not that he administered it ,but that he administered it hastyly.Nowadays you have the info and you can make the decision...You know if things can go wrong, you know the possible benefits, you know the possible dangers so you can make an informed decision. For example i do not know if i approached you in a kicking crowded party and proposed 500-700 micrograms of LSD to be squirted in your mouth would be a good idea. The "ego death" dosage for example im proposing could posse to you some problems in a big ,loud crowded party ,where after the dose you might need to recline a bit since the whole experience will go further inside than a "retinal circus". Quite frankly ,it would amaze me if you accepted such a dose to be administered in such a setting.

What i say ,is that Tim could have done what he did in a more clever manner, maybe making most out of this compound than he already did...He was a clever man,no doubt and he had ambition.I simply dont know if it was recklessness or something else

Day trip to say 'happy birthday' to centenarian who made LSD
January 14, 2006 - timesonline.co.uk

A 100-YEAR-OLD man stood before an adoring crowd in Basle yesterday and described the bliss of tripping on acid.

This was no antique hippy, but the oracle himself. Albert Hofmann, an unassuming Swiss chemist, is the discoverer of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), the drug that altered the consciousness of two generations, whether they took it or not.

“It gave me inner joy and peace. It opened my eyes to the miracle of creation,” Dr Hofmann said of the substance he synthesised from fungus in his Basle laboratory in 1938. “This is one of the sacred drugs that change human consciousness.”

This weekend the great and the good of the world’s “psychedelic community” have gathered to wish happy birthday to the father of the hallucinogenic chemical, which was used for therapy and recreation until it was banned worldwide in the mid-1960s after flooding the streets of America and Europe.

The LSD tribe of scientists, psychiatrists, artists, shamans and musicians has converged for a congress in this prim city on the Rhine to celebrate the achievement of Dr Hofmann, who is mentally sharp and gets around on crutches. His “divine revelation” inspired writers such as Aldous Huxley, Ken Kesey and Jack Kerouac, Andy Warhol and many other painters; it powered the 1960s summer of love and fuelled the creative juices of the first rock generation.

Without LSD, the Beatles would not have written Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, the culture would have been less counter, Jimi Hendrix might have gone unnoticed and the Sixties would not have been candy- coloured. The late Timothy Leary, the Harvard professor who became LSD’s guru, would never have urged the world to “turn on, tune in and drop out”.

“LSD is the only pharmaceutical product that has had a political effect,” said Felix Hasler, a Zurich University scientist. “It is not just a drug. It is Heaven, Hell and visions all at the same time.”

The fans in Basle are unanimous that LSD, which was widely used in psychiatry in the 1950s, must be allowed again, at least for medical purposes. Clearly some in Basle — including Dr Hofmann — have not exactly been abstaining since the 1960s but the Swiss police took little interest in a gathering that is less a happening than an academic convention. The Swiss Government even congratulated Dr Hofmann on his century.

Dapper in suit and tie, the chemist said that raw eggs and muesli were the secret of his longevity, not magic mushrooms. “But LSD is a gift of the plants. It is like a vitamin for the mind,” he added.

Dr Hofmann was working for Sandoz pharmaceuticals, now Novartis, when he stumbled across the mind-bending powers of LSD, which he had been researching as a medicine. He was bicycling home in April 1943 when he began seeing colours and “had a wonderful feeling”, he said. He suspected LSD that he had absorbed at work. He tried a bigger dose. “It was very frightening. It was the first bad trip. But then the horror turned into a wonderful experience. I felt as if I was reborn.”

He does not agree with the transcendental devotees in Basle who dream of having LSD approved for public consumption. It should be allowed to researchers and to doctors in the same way as they have access to morphine and mood-altering drugs, he said.

He calls himself a mystic, “because all scientists must be mystics”, but he believes that the same epiphanies and higher states can be achieved through meditation, yoga, music or other pursuits. “LSD is just a tool to turn us into what we are supposed to be: human beings and not creatures focused on technology and nothing else,” he said.

There was little talk of the dangers of LSD among the enthusiasts. A star turn was performed at the opening by Rolf Verres, director of the Heidelburg University Clinic in Germany. He drew applause by saying that LSD “is a sacred drug” and there should be centres where it could be administered.

He then sat down at a grand piano and rendered a technically impeccable performance of a piece which he had composed in Dr Hofmann’s honour.

I agree with him, I think certain drugs should be valued rather than "demonized". Society gives bad images of drugs to every generation. Its like learning your ABCs, we are taught to hate drugs. If we are taught to respect them in use, I think it would connect everyone deeper with mother nature and better mankind.
