Here's a list of End of the World predictions throuout history. You'll note that none came true. A * under Predictor indicates the data is too much to fit in the column. PM me if you want sources, and I'll hook you up with my FTP server.

2012 actually correlates to some astronomical events, though some of those events may have too. I'm not sure about 2012 to be honest, though I think it would be cool if something happened. I have a sneaking suspicion that these shifts or 'apocalypses' are going to be more subtle than people expect.

Also, wasn't there a thread in the Mysticism board about apocalypse actually having a different historical meaning that it does now?

I hope so, I'm kind of in the mood for something grilled.

Though I think your post may belong in the food board

2012 actually correlates to some astronomical events

The date corresponds to a conjunction of the ecliptic with the galactic plane. This happens once every ~26,000 years. That's ~200,000 times so far since the solar system formed.

What's one more time?

Besides, I happen to know that the first Terminator arrives here from the year 2028, so there!

What's one more time?

Beats me, I wasn't around last time.

Though you could argue that since last time it happened there's no record of anything out of the ordinary happening, chances are nothing extraordinary will happen this time around either. Still though, it's rather entertaining to imagine something happening.

Also one cannot discount the possibility that something would happen on a more subtle level than, say, aliens raining from the sky (cool as that would be, I don't think that that's going to happen).

Um, is repent a scary word for some? I thought it just meant, to reflect on things you've done that were pretty shitty to do to yourself and others and to make your amends for them through forgiving yourself or some form of forgiveness in general. Forgiveness just means- giving way to what has been, is and will be. It's not a scary word either and opens new doors to better days.

No matter what time of life your in, making amends is never a bad thing to do. It does good and feels good. Forget about it improving the quality of your after life if you don't believe in one. Do it because, it improves the quality of the life you are living now.

You make it sound like  foolish, horrible and sinister advice diploid.

Actually, I believe that 2012 is the end of the last cycle of the Mayan calendar. The Mayans were freaky-good at astronomy, and had eclipse predicting down to a level beyond what any other ancient civilization had done.

Of course, most of the writings of exactly what happened were destroyed by the Spanish explorers, so most of what we know is, well, nothing.

Aside from that, the Mayans generally has a cyclical view of the universe, so rather then 2012 being the end, it'd most likely be some sort of rebirth.

You make it sound like foolish, horrible and sinister advice diploid

You missed the joke embedded in the title of the thread, but then if I have to explain it, it won't be funny.

In any case, what's foolish, horrible, and sinister is believing the year 2012 will be different than any other.

And if history is any indicator, in 2013 the conspiracy nuts will invent yet another Armageddon d'Jour, then a few days later I'll revise my list and start this thread again. :shake:

If people really believe life and the world will end on that date, just have fun knowing how funny it will be when the sun comes up over the horizon the next morning and there are still bills to paid and food to put on the table.

THEN you can laugh your ass off at the doomsdayers. And do your naner naner  thing. Is that what this is all about to you, being right? Or would you really like to help resolve fears in others?

In the mean time, do you think a simple "It's BS!" Is going to change the mind off those who are really afraid?

Is making fun of them going to change their minds? Doubtful as it's difficult for people in fear to suddenly become lighthearted and reasonable for no good reason.

You can post that stuff of prophets who missed and yet, if you understand fear, that was then and this is now for people. The fear for them is about what's up ahead, not what has come and gone.

There is only one sane thing to do for those who are afraid. Listen to those that are acknowledging an ending of sorts, just not an ending of life and the planet.

Like when I found out that Apocalypse actually just meant revelation in Greek at the time it was used, not war and ending. I shared that. Its the revelations people who are scared of an end. One of these days Blue and I will work on that Bastard to and show, its not what it appears to be.

The 2012ers are going off the Mayan calender and that is just the ending of a cosmic cycle, not the end of human life or the planet. They are in understanding that just a sublle influential shift is undergoing, that's all. If you sneeze, you'll miss it it's so subtle.

Then you have me and others, who know, 12/21/2005 was the pivotal hump to get through and we did and all is well. We hit critical mass earlier then expected. And that was the BIG deal, the last weeks of Dec. if you sneezed, you missed it.

Why don't you wait until someone actually posts and says, they are afraid of whats to come and then, work through those fears with them one by one in a way THEY can relate to and understand you. It's going to be related to revelations and events discussed in it.

That has nothing to do with Mayan stuff and many are confusing the two. Start working on revelations if you want to understand their fears and resolve them.

And in the meantime, if its the scare some people need to wake up and get their shit together well, then , thats not a bad thing either.

What is your concern, that because people think the world is going to end that they will live like careless shit heads? Look around, people who don't fear the end do it anyways:lol:

I don't even know anyone who beleives the end of the world is nigh, Do you?

There have always been doomsday nuts. We are all still here.

if they believed it enough, it was real for them, just not for anyone else, so the death they experienced was more like a 'second coming' persay to them, just looked like they died to everyone else...

Is that what this is all about to you, being right?

No Jigz, how can you read my thoughts for years and still have no clue what I'm about. It's never about me. It's about fighting irrationality, fighting it because it is harmful to believe fantasy as if it is reality.

Want examples?

1. It is irrationality that buries its head in the sand and refuses medical marijuana to patients dying in pain by refusing to acknowledge study after study after study (including some commissioned by the DEA and and later suppressed) that show MJ is one of the safest drugs humanity has ever discovered, and the other studies that show it does indeed help patients suffering cancer, AIDS, diabetic neuropathy, and a long list of other painful diseases.

2. It is irrational beliefs that have us killing and dying in Iraq by the dozens on a daily basis.

3. It is irrational beliefs that fosters the suicide bomber who thinks God wants him to blow himself up in a crowd of shoppers that often includes children.

4. It is irrational beliefs that justifies forced female circumcision, oppression, and physical and emotional abuse in male extremist religious fanatics around the world.

5. It is irrational beliefs that justified the forced castration of choir boys just before puberty by the church in order that their voices would remain in a high register pleasing to God.

6. It is irrational beliefs that killed ONE THOUSAND, including almost 300 CHILDREN in Guyana when wild irrationalist Jim Jones decided that's what God wanted.

7. It is irrational beliefs in UFO comets that lead nearly 40 people to castrate themselves and later commit suicide while wearing identical Nike sneakers in order for their 'souls' to hitch a ride on a spaceship.

8. It is irrational beliefs that lead the gullible and depressed to spend more than they can afford on disgusting predator psychics who tell them their dead loved one is happy.

9. As for 2012, that it is bullshit doesn't spare the gullible and dim-witted among us from suffering fear, stress, and depression. Witness the poor guy asking in MRP about the end of the world in 2012.

Want me to go on? I could all weekend and not run out of reasons irrationality was the scourge of humanity our entire history and only recently, with the rise of science and rationality, have we come from living in huts to landing on the moon.

Believing made up bullshit, including that which you've convinced yourself is true without corroboration other than your own flawed human psychology, is bad. Bad for you, bad for me, bad for everyone.

In 1000 years, if humans are still around, they will look back at these times the way we look back at how blood letting and leaches were used to cure disease and how witches were burned alive to ward off Satan.

I can't fix the world, but I can do my tiny part to fight these destructive bullshit beliefs, and here I am.

I have one better then leeches. They are now sterilizing maggots to clean out open flesh wounds.

Diploid, you' cant erase the words of Paul in Revelations. You can work to attempt to understand them and attempt to understand why people believe in them. From there you can work to ease irrational fears.

You're ranting, is just a turn off to anyone with ears willing to listen.

I have been reading you for a long time, and I notice you only see the bad side of what you call irrational. People do a lot of irrational things that turn out well for themselves or towards accomplishing goals. We don't progress by rationing alone. Rationing is the process of conserving. How far do you take? Do you conserve to the point people are immobilized by fear paralysis of using and spending what is available to get from point A to point B.

Why do you think what is rational from your POV is the rational view from another's?

You haven't walked in everyones shoes to understand why they make the choices and decisions they do. Was it irrational of me to spend about the last 500 my business had just to bribe a mechanic to come out to look at the engine, when he said he was to busy that day? My husband thought I was nuts when I insisted and made the call. Had that boat not been able to go out the next day, a major resort that booked tours with us would've dropped us for canceling on a VIP party. I got the guy to come out, he waived the bribe, fixed it and we kept the major vendor that brought in $120,000 a year alone.

I have pulled more irrational shit then I can remember that saved the day and brought big returns.

There's a time to hold back and time to let it go and to go for it. What you call irrationality I call risk taking. Some loose big and some win big. It's how we have moved forward as much as we have been held back back by it, however, thanks to the majority being irrational, we are more ahead then behind in progress.

Oh ya, lets fill a ton of highly explosive rocket fuel into a metal tube and shoot people to the moon. Cool ya, go for it. I want to ride in it first! The nuts make the shit happen.

Where when and how people apply it is one thing. The results are another. Often being rational has lead to big losses for people.

As for that poor guy in MRP? That had puppet troll written all over it.

Who goes from absolutely shredding on people working with crystals to "Uhh do you believe the end of the world stuff?"

Suit yourself, keep mocking, keep judging, keep misunderstanding and think you are saving the world from what it's been built on.

Back in the day, it wasn't rational to go sail your boat off the end of the flat earth. People thought Christopher was fucken nuts.

My concern is that if everyone became rational tomorrow, the end would come-quickly as people caved in on themselves under the pressure of withholding and not believing, something extra ordinary can come of something when taking risks and chances, irrational as they may appear at the time.

Well, we agree on one thing here, we don't want to see people in needless fear.  I'm trying to understand the way you are going about it. The phrase-"It's Bullshit" is not supportive evidence to make one have a change of mind or heart. Until you can back up why revelations is BS, who that believes in it are you going to sway?

The phrase-"It's Bullshit" is not supportive evidence to make one have a change of mind or heart.

Yah, tell that to the relatives of Jim Jones' victims.

Many exploratative adventures begin with irrational ideas.
It's all risk, some pay off and some rip off.

Seeing as how you are so concerned with irrational thoughts and suicide dip, I expect to be seeing more of you in the health forum helping the real deal.

Hahaha Mush, before you put that up, I mailed dip saying that I just realized 50% of my replies lately were to dips posts. I didn't want him to think I was stalking him. :lol:

Jigloid sounds like a prostitute from mars. I think swami came up with that one.

It must be an Atlantean karmic thing.:rofl2: I'm going to put up a funny article I came across on Atlantis at another board the other night. According to it, a bunch of them were bent on scientific domination and some were trying to curtail it. What a hoot! Sounds like Atlantis has been arising in P&S. :rofl2: What if this is all just like old times? :rofl2:  It'll be in MR&P

I always am on the side that 'irationalities' have to be considered and explored, to prove out the irrational part (if hurting) and collect the remaining valuable parts...

Not debunking/trashing too quick, better exploration and conceptualising is the call of the truth.

The judge does alway and only come at the end !

Let's collect some concepts before, ok ?

Let's explore the irrationalities !

hmm about the 2012 thing , it would seem as if they got it down to a specific date ( i remember it from my world history ) the date was Dec 28 2012.
that should put a downer on many a chirstmas in south america haha, oh and as for the shamans that still believe in all there esoteric rituals and this " end of the world 2012 party " , they all must commit suicide on that date .. so that should also make for , if nothing else , good news. :foreheadslap:

Well that soundspretty nice about the ancient calendar and all that although its rather worrisome. That post seems to tempt the gods, so to speak, all those failed prediction, and then you saying probably nothing is a very dangerous 'tease'if I could put it that way...
Because, think about it my friend, all those said 'nothing happened'but think about the fact that when the end of the world does come it is in fact going to be at the bottom of the list and its gonna say all the shit went down yo. And its just very unpleasant to see that Ancient Calendar prediction at the bottom of the list, if you catch my drift... You've ruined the next six years of my life...!!!! I won't get a good night's rest until 20013 begins. Now that sounds pretty fucking ominous don't it...!

He has seemingly manipulated you rather well, and he simply made a list of failed predictions. Imagine if he made his own prediction, making his eyes look all crazy and waving his fingers in the air quite mysteriously.... That would be much more powerful.

I'm going to play the "Doomsday Prediction Game" myself, except rather than basing my predictions on arbitrary premises, I'm going to base it on an actual scientific discovery. I predict that 2036 is the year that shit shall hit fans and the world shall plunge into black darkness [literally].

And that will bring it close enough to Earth's gravity to cause its orbital trajectory to alter. The next time it gets that close to our neighborhood will be 2036, and the scientists think its trajectory change could well have put it on a collision course with Earth."

why should i believe that .com website?

Well, that's not the only web site giving news of the asteroid; there are many more science oriented sites that report the same thing.

Unlike mysticism where you have to take the mystic's word without corroboration, science is a rational pursuit. This means that when science says something, it also provides you with all the information that lead to the statement. This allows other scientists (and you) to point your telescope at the provided coordinates and calculate the orbit of the comet for yourself to verify or refute the scientific results.

That's why you should believe: because you can see it for yourself.

I highly doubt there is a good side to irrational.

People do a lot of irrational things that turn out well for themselves or towards accomplishing goals. We don't progress by rationing alone. Rationing is the process of conserving. How far do you take? Do you conserve to the point people are immobilized by fear paralysis of using and spending what is available to get from point A to point B.

I dispute all of these points. Logic/reason/rationality grants one the tools one can use to solve problems. It is irrational to be paralyzed by fear. If one desires to live, and one is confronted by a threat, the best course of action is to escape from, or dispose of said threat. It requires no bit of irrationality to act/take risks. If there's somehow a gambling table which on average, puts out $1.02 more then you put into it, it is rational to play such games. That's what a casino is (though not for those that spend their money in one).
Quote:

gettinjiggywithit said:
Was it irrational of me to spend about the last 500 my business had just to bribe a mechanic to come out to look at the engine, when he said he was to busy that day?

No, it wasn't. You had two options. Option A consisted of making the attempt of getting the mechanic over at all costs with what resources you had (as stated, $500) and being able to perform a service which would more then recoup your losses and gain you a customer, or losing the profit, losing a potential customer, and keeping the $500. Irrationality played no part in your decision.
Quote:

gettinjiggywithit said:
I have pulled more irrational shit then I can remember that saved the day and brought big returns.

I doubt it. While sometimes, you will succeed, on the whole, it's like gambling. It's a tax on your inability to think. Your examples of "irrationality" are not such, and, from what little I've read, the majority of your "irrational" acts are misnamed from a want to believe that such a thing does humanity good.
Quote:

gettinjiggywithit said:
There's a time to hold back and time to let it go and to go for it. What you call irrationality I call risk taking. Some loose big and some win big. See previous.

Weather or not they were nuts is to be debated, but rocketeering is a lot less random then you seem to think. Ever wonder why "rocket science" is synonymous with complex/difficult to learn? Ir requires tremendous amounts of math and logic (yes, logic) to understand and not kill the majority of your explorers. Exploration is a dangerous field, but it's worth it to many.
Quote:

Rationality has led to losses, however, on the whole, rationality is far better the irrationality on what to live your life by. Irrationality usually leads to bigger, more frequent, losses.

My greatest dream is for the world to become rational, and dispense with it's idiotic rituals, traditions, and superstitions. Rationality, logic, and science, have done far more for the world then irrationality and blind faith have ever done. The entire world that you live in is based on that which you fear. Irrationality is what keeps people from using medicine in favor of prayer (so-called Christian scientists), propagates the spread of STD's in Africa (ever heard of the priests burning condoms?), and motivates some people to push for the central finding of modern biology to be considered on the same level as a religious myth.

The phrase-"It's Bullshit" is not supportive evidence to make one have a change of mind or heart. Until you can back up why revelations is BS, who that believes in it are you going to sway?

Have you ever read the bible? Ever played "dueling scriptures?" I can support virtually any position with quotes from the bible. Aside from that, the bible is scientifically inaccurate, roughly half of it morally damnable, and all of it is unsubstantiated. If I said that the world is going to end on June 20'th of 2006, and in order to get into heaven, you have to kill yourself, who are you to tell me the book I base on such "revelations" is incorrect? So back up why my hypothetical book is BS? Or are you going to kill yourself on the 19'th of June this year?

why should i believe that .com website?

Well, that's not the only web site giving news of the asteroid; there are many more science oriented sites that report the same thing.

Unlike mysticism where you have to take the mystic's word without corroboration, science is a rational pursuit. This means that when science says something, it also provides you with all the information that lead to the statement. This allows other scientists (and you) to point your telescope at the provided coordinates and calculate the orbit of the comet for yourself to verify or refute the scientific results.

That's why you should believe: because you can see it for yourself.

sounds like bullshit

Thanks for taking up space in the thread while contributing nothing to the discussion.

Care to elaborate on why it's bullshit or is just saying so the best you can do?

I think it's bullshit to say that science always provides information backing up what they say. Now, obviously that's what science aspires to do, but in practice, they often dogmatically cling to a certain theory for long periods of time while evidence which calls that theory into question is suppressed, and any articles supporting an alternative theory or questioning the current one are kept out of scientific journals. If you don't believe me, look up Piltdown Man.

Scientists are humans and subject to all the failings of humans. That the Piltdown fossils were faked doesn't change the truth that all scientific results are, by definition, available to anyone who questions their validity. This is why the Piltdown fake was eventually exposed: BECAUSE of science, not in spite of it.

My reply above was specifically regarding the asteroid whose orbital elements have been published. Anyone who doubts the existence of this asteroid can point their telescope at the calculated coordinates and see if for himself.

Believe the asteroid exists not because some scientist told you it exits, but because he showed you where to look to see it for yourself.

The posts on this thread remind me of a world without God. Without God we are lost. There are those out there that know God's plan, and when you know God's plan, EVERYTHING makes sense. Those that KNOW God, KNOW. They just aren't saying, for saying would interfere with God's plan.

There is truth out there, it will be found when you find God, or better stated God finds you.

In other words, they claim to know, but don't. Unless one can explain their claimed knowledge, their "knowledge" is worthless to the populace, and arguing for it, if it truly can't be known through explanation, is pointless.

God is like a pink unicorn. I ask you to show it to me, you say okay, but it's invisible. I ask if I can capture it on an infrared camera, to detect it's presence/shape, you respond that it produces no heat. I ask if I can touch it, you respond that it's intangible. Anything I try to do to prove of disprove your claim is countered with he idea that we simply can't detect it.

Yet, somehow, you believe it's there. Against all evidence.

You cite the evidence of the universe itself, claiming it must've had a unicorn to create it. And you know about this unicorn because of a book (or, more correctly, series of stories passes on by oral tradition for most of their lifetime, and only later written down) that includes wildly inaccurate predictions, magic, mythical characters, and a primary character that corresponds to the "mythic hero archetype."

I claim the book is unreliable, and should have no more importance placed upon it then the Grecian gods, or the Masai creation, or the Hindu caste system.

I don't see how one can fight that, based on "knowledge" that those who know can't tell, and "revelation" that won't come to those who're seeking it, but only to a select few.

Any wonder why there's such a strong inverse correlation between intelligence/education and religious devotion?

The reason why it can't be proved, because if it was, everyone would believe. God wants us to CHOOSE whether or not he exists.

If we decide God exists, then God exists.
If we decide God doesn't exist, then God doesn't exist.

God exists for me cause I choose God, before that I thought I knew the way the world was, mostly because I wanted to, or thought it was the way it was, and so it was.

Until I found God, then the truth about the world was revealed to me, then the world changed, it was still the same world yet I was seeing it from a different POINT OF VIEW which revealed the truth.

If you decide there is no God, there is no God, so the truth is:

BOTH you and me are right.

Then why did you say without "god, we are lost"? If the only difference is in our perspective of the world, what's the point of debating weather or not god exists? In essence, why are you posting, according to you?

someone tells you to look at a certain spot in the sky and you happen to see something there.....doesn't prove that a giant asteroid will collide with earth in the year 2036.

looking at an object through a telescope doesn't say much. you'd need to know a lot more than just the coordinates in the sky. how would you determine the orbit or size from observing the light that reflects into the lens of your telescope?

The reason why my responses are confusing because I am thinking 4th dimensionally and am moving toward unity consciousness, the idea of God exists, and makes enough sense in my mind/heart but when I speak of it in the 3rd dimension it makes no sense.

There is not enough room in the 3rd dimension for the idea of God to fit and be perfectly understood.

Thats why there's a thing called faith. You cannot comprehend it all completely for yourself, so you must have faith in God's words to make up for your lack in understanding.

I am not here to prove or disprove anyone or any idea, I can only hope to INSPIRE with these ideas so that maybe you will one day find the higher power that is God and find your life is far better with God than without.

but that is your choice, I've said enough.

how do you know your thinking of a 4th dimension, when your thinking is based in a 3-d one?

I believe our 3-d world has many unknown properties....some might call these unknown properties God.

You didn't answer any of my questions....and I know what faith is.

if you want to inspire people to live better lives...aren't there much more effective ways of inspiring people instead of telling people to have faith in God?

or at least tell me what it means to have faith in God.
like....here I go....

I have faith there is a loving God. why isn't my life instantly better?

tell me what it means to have faith...and why do things seem to get worse first often before getting better?

is there a certain way i need to think of God or have faith?

and what if you don't choose?

Then it is more likely you will recognize the signs God leaves you and move toward believing in God, than if you choose not to believe. You would be neutral and open to both possibilities.

or what if you choose...."i don't know if God exists."

then pray to God, to help you understand this, my mother didn't wasn't sure of "Mary the mother of Jesus" of her role in heaven, so she prayed to her, and Mary Appeared to her.

does God really want you to choose? why? (or why do you think so). is it more important to make a decision about the existence of God, over lets say.....deciding what time to wake up in the morning?

God wants you to choose because like a good parent he wants whats best for his children but also accepts your decision

how do you know your thinking of a 4th dimension, when your thinking is based in a 3-d one?

There is more to us than ourselves that exists here, there is a higher self and a lower self, your lower self is your child like self (inner child) use that to contact your higher self in the 4th dimension to access 4th dimensional space to think 4th dimensionally.

I have faith there is a loving God. why isn't my life instantly better?

Faith is much more than just saying or believing you have faith, faith is also on how you live your life, for example lets say that I say I have faith in God, but have insurance because I am afraid I might lose everything if I don't, but if I truly have faith in God I would not be afraid of losing everything because I KNOW God will take care of me.

tell me what it means to have faith...and why do things seem to get worse first often before getting better?

Its part of the spiritual evolution process, we need to have bad things happen in order for us to LEARN, if everything was perfect we would learn nothing.

is there a certain way i need to think of God or have faith?

Put your trust in God rather than earthly things such as (saving up a lot of money just in case something bad happens, insurance, govt, etc.

This isn't something that happens overnight, it took me 11 years since I started searching for God before I found God, this is a GRADUAL process that takes time.

Hope I answered all your questions.

Read the bible it is a good place to start to INSPIRE you to find the living word of God.

tamie, I know that sounds dull, but without the 'real' experience of 'evil', you would not have 'free choice'.
Why are you so sure that our mind works only in a '3-D' mode ? Its complexity could have the purpose of 'accessing' higher 'dimensions'.

Demotri, I know what you talk about and I appreciate your words very much !

edit:
If reading the bible is understood in principle of inspiration, then the continuing efforts to understand other old and sacred texts in comparison is a healthy etude

not never. We have to leave this planet someday (as a race or/and individualy), even if everything rules out 'good'
And in far far future, we have to have an idea about how to persist the dying/rebirthing universe, as far as our theories are right

not everyone who doubts can do this.

Anyone who makes a modest investment in amateur astronomical gear can do this.

looking at an object through a telescope doesn't say much.

You make ignorant statements about astronomy without the slightest understanding of what you summarily dismiss.

Looking at an object through a telescope at two different times is all you need to characterize the entire orbit of an object.

Bury your head in the sand and insist the Earth is flat if you wish; everyone else who bothers to look carefully at the evidence will know the truth.

I think, if one will hit earth, it will be a dark one, out of the nothing...
