here's another photo, a closep comparison after they are drying a bit. The two in the middle are normal cyanescens. All the others are this new species

The new ones are quite a bit fleshier then the cyanescens and generally speaking from the photos you have been posting the cap is almost always umbilicate. Is the later part of that statement true or do my eyes just deceive me?
Do you have any close up of the gills and stipe that you could post as well?

Yes, baycafe, the cap is almost always umbilicate. Nearly always anyway But when they dry, it either disappears or the cap splits, kind of like cyanescens does sometimes. It's just diabolically close to cyans, except for that confounded size and shape. I almost passed these by again, and I've picked them before.....I'm biking along, and looking at these thinking 'wtf'?, this is just after I passed the cyan patch too, and I know they are not quite normal. Not like many other species I've seen around the bay. Most of the time I know if they are cyans or not, but this...man oh man, this is whole new thing :P
Here's some closeups.. The color is more red as this is under room light now.

Auweia, awesome find! What a week. First tahoe finds what appear to be stuntzii and now this. Also, I was in Monterey today for work and didn't have much time to spare but I did manage to find a few red stropharia in some alder mulch. From what I know cyanescens haven't been found that far south but the indicator mushroom is there. Maybe cyans too? Things are getting very interesting.
A quick question about the new giant mutant cyan. How did you know they were safe? Was it the bluing or the spore print or both? I'm still new to identifying psilocybin mushrooms and I'm eager to get out there and find this new species.

they might look like the ones in that thread...No way to tell for sure if I didn't see it personally. For lack of any other name, I suppose fibs would be ok to use until a new name can be found. But they don't lose their potency as reported with fibs
