 What do toads have to do with anything? (the mythology and meaning behind toads?)

I've been seeing toads everywhere the past few days. It has me wondering if there is something about them that I don't know and why the universe is sending me so many toads to think about. I think that toads might be a totem animal for me, since I'm recalling how often I interacted with them during my childhood. They're always around, I've always been seeing toads, I'm just now realizing this. You might say that there is something in me that attracts or "zeros in" on anything toad-related. I am always running across toads.
What is it about them I should be seeing? What kind of mystery does a toad have?
Does anyone have anything interesting to say about them? It's true they pee on you when you hold them, as sort of a defense mechanism, I believe. What sort of mythology and religious lore surrounds toads? I am about to do a search myself on google to see what I unveil.
I realize this post might sound odd...but it's just kinda important to me that I research toads all I can right now. (the why is a long story)
Any thoughts?

Do you find toads particularly unattractive? Just curious... they're one of those animals a lot of people consider "Ugly"... might have somethin' to do with it?

No, I love toads. As a kid, I was always going toad hunting in the woods, then bringing them home and playing with them in the sandbox. I've never thought they were ugly, on the contrary I've always been filled with delight after discovering a toad minding his own business!  I always have to stop and "chat" with one of them!
The word TOAD appears constantly in my life.

I've picked up huge Bufo Marinus toads, with work gloves on, and yes, they relieve themselves on you. It was greenish and probably more like the shits (issuing from its cloaca). These toads were smart - they would wait for the dogs to go in for the night, then they would enter the 'dog door,' sit in the dish, and glut themselves on dry dog food. Unfortunately, the stuff expands and I found one dead once with its stomach completely prolapsed out of its mouth! Yecch, poor thing. Sometimes they couldn't get out of the porch and would bang into the sheet metal til they found the dog door. I would pick them up and free them.
The alchemical symbolism of the toad is the most familiar to me. I have two large dragons on a wall facing a sun-moon conjunctio plaque. I was looking for a toad to place on the shelf below and between them. Perhaps the following reference would supply you with some helpful alchemical symbolism:

If you haven't seen it yet, I would highly recommend the documentary "Cane Toads". It's about the introduction of the poisonous/hallucinogenic Bufo marinus to Australia.
This movie is both educational and extremely funny. The first time I saw it, I rented it at Blockbuster, and I recently saw it again in my biology class.
The toad has much to teach us!

Toads and frogs are also symbols of transformation.... See toad turning to prince, tadpoles turning into toads and frogs!

I don't know how hallucinogenic they are exactly, a friend actually collected some of that goo from the glands on the head, rolled it into a ball and tried to smoke it! Now I know how desparate people can get: shooting peanut oil in prison (and 2 little kids who couldn't get a syringe cut themselves and tried to push peanut butter into the wound!), drinking cough medicine, sniffing glue/gasoline, but this was novel as well as gross.

I've also liked amphibians through my entire life, I never understood why some people are so repulsed by them.

When I lived with my ex-wife, the neighbor directly behind us hadn't walked out into her back yard for 10 years (according to her next door neighbor) because she was horrified by Bufo toads!

I think the toad is a symbol for transformation. after all amphibians brought live from the oceans into land. that's probably one of biggest transformations in the evolution of life on this planet.
and I believe you can get intoxicated with some toads by simply licking the skin. so you know, the famous kiss that turns the toad into a prince, it's all in your mind... and yet for real.
