All the Brits saying they're better than the US.
All the Germans blah blah
And the rest of Europe.
It's all bullshit.
I am very European, half Finnish, half Swiss (who like to call themselves "the womb of democracy" or something like that.
I like the American constitutional freedoms. I really support them. Free speech is great. Right to bear arms, fucking Charlton Heston is my president (ok not quite).. Freedom of religion, of political sides.. The constitution of the 18th century (forgive me I don't know the exact year) was a Democratic Anarchists paradise no (apart from the white male parts which really couldn't bechanged around the time I believe)? But it's all been modified in the wrong ways (War on Drugs) and misinterpreted and just plainly violated (Civil freedoms in the war on terror, McCarthy and the reds).
What did Europe do in the meantime? War on European terrorists, too many groups to count, war on free right wing speech (anti-semitism laws.. say anything bad against jews and you face a fine or a jail term!, say something against the righties and you get cheered.. bullshit). War on weapons, yes, Europe does have a smaller number of firearm violence but it certainly isn't because of gun control it's because of education and social programs that seem to work better than the American ones. In the UN and NGO studies, the European countries seem to be better off.
What did I wish to say?
Europeans, don't bash America, your governments are about as repressive overall. America, put more of your $350 billion defense budget into education and getting the poor out of the ghettos where the only option is to go to illegal businesses. Not like the defense helps preventing the big terrorist attacks apparently hm? The last plane was prevented from blowing up by a $20k a year stewardess.
I'm starting to show my red genes again I suppose. It's worse when I'm sober.

get ready they're going to kick you out of Europe because they feel that thier nation is perfect and all others need to learn from them....whenever you feel like coming over to the USA there will be a cold one waiting for ya..

Originally my family left europe, due to a huge genocidal movement put through by Christians against all those who were'nt christians in the 1300's. Most Celtics were killed. Why? Who knows. but still I hate christians, who are mostly europeans who have never read the proverbs of there own bible.

I mean grudges are what built this country. Right, grudges against indians, but most particulary Affies. Fuck Afghanistans's they killed my schoolteachers's freind who was just visiting the trade center. I mean I am seriously ready to get my training by the counterinsurigency cia funded armies of Baluchistan. Who is Ready.

A major reason why European defense budgets are able to be so low is the huge US budget. The USA does most of the heavy lifting for NATO, and bears most of the cost. If the US pulled out of Europe, you would see England, France, and Germany having to spend massive amounts of cash to fill the gap.

There is a proposal to create a European army (the Rapid Reaction Force) for just such reasons. However the US is against the idea because they think it would undermine NATO i.e. they would loose power and control.

mm, I'm aware of the new european army. It somewhat frightens me. No nation on earth has ever built up a standing army simply to stand. Armed forces are for fighting and that's what they all inevitably do. The new european power is the same geographic area which once was the Roman Empire. I'm convinced that the EU will eventually be the most powerful force on earth and just might control the entire world, as a world power, and in a greater way than Rome ever did. The EU is in my opinion the Roman Empire risen up from ashes like the mythical phoenix.

The EU army is to be created to fulfill roles that are already being carried out by British/French etc troops i.e. peacekeeping in Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan etc.. so it wont be a 'standing army' as you put it, it is simply a way of responding quickly to international crises that the US are reluctant to get involved with.
