cool.
I was into kde, but I have been attracted to simplicity of gnome.
I'm not into eye-candy so much anymore
and I find kde to be slightly tacky.
gnome is just....plain and simple.
+ as wilshire pointed out, gnome fits in ubuntu better (which I use).
eventually I'd like to try open/fluxbox or some
of the other lightweight windowmanagers.
but for now, gnome

after using GNOME now for a little over a month, i think i can say that i'll be using it as my default desktop well into the future.

it's simpler and it works well. firefox, thunderbird, gaim, and nicotine are all gtk and work faster and look better on gnome. the only qt app i use is k3b. i always thought that gnome was ugly. i've got a gnome desktop right now that i think looks great. i'm staying.

i am going to try this when it is released though:

i use fluxbox if i am running a window manager. the reason i gravitated to it easier than most people is because even when i ran windows XP, i used blackbox for windows (bb4win). i like the idea of setting up up from scratch with exactly what i use.... no more, no less. i like the ease of writing the menus to behaive exactly how i like them to. also, being a gentoo'r, i am quite used to working with the command line. i have alt+z as the shortcut to bring up an xterm that runs as my background so i can keep an eye on everything i have logging or working on via the active command line background.

just my 2 cents

btw, here is a good wiki for setting up fluxbox. like all things gentoo, it will force you to learn how to work with it and get a good foundation on how to make it exactly what you like.

I am interested in fluxbox. I have it installed and I'm learning how to configure it. now, what are your thoughts on openbox?

i have never used it. i had no reason to try it since i was happy with fluxbox.

I gave fluxbox a try just to see what all the fuss is about, but I really don't see the appeal. I can't find anything it does that enlightenment doesn't do, and enlightenment looks nicer too.

how did you get that os-x style panel in the bottom? i've been able to get a similar thing running on kde (can't remember the apps name right now...), but for gnome am only able to add panels to the four sides of the screen, and they can't have a transparent background
