computer shuts itself off

so, about once every 24hrs my computer shuts itself off, the only way to turn it back on is to actually cut power to it, i.e. remove the cord, and wait a few seconds... like until the light on the ethernet light fades out, and then plug it back in... if i choose to shut it down myself, it will power back on through the button. i changed the power supply suspecting this would fix it, however the problem remains. do you think this could be a result of overheating? i've had my computer running nearly 24/7 thanks to filesharing for the last year. perhaps it's just old. i've been having the problem for a couple of weeks. i'm still looking at new motherboards and processers, and will throw in the towel and purchase something possibly as soon as tomorrow. it's an asus motherboard and an athlon 2800 may check out asus's website here now.
any suggestions? a computer that can't run a couple days straight is no good to me.
thanks, CJ

If it locks up a softreboot does not bring it back up you can always bet on hardware..
Overheating should not keep it from power cycling. Unfortunatly that dosent narrow things down much.
power supply motherboard cpu memory
One of thoes would be my guess. Check out the capacitors on your MB if any of them appear to have ozzed out of the cap theres your problem.

thanks, bro. we registered accounts here both in 04/00, heheh, and i think we've raddled off nearly encyclopedic amounts of knowledge to each other once on chat - have occasionally logged on to shroomery chat as mrbungle since '98 (though seems others may at times have claimed my nick)...... anyhoo.. thanks for the response.
