Listening to what? Saying you're listening to electronic is almost as broad of a statement as "I'm listening to non-electronic music."

I'm sure many of us could make personal recommendations.

I hear the beat of the universe. It takes me to the place where the archaic energy of the earth meets with the present moment then it takes me along with it through the eternal moment of time and into the blissful void of oneness. The reason why there are so many types of music is because there are so many different types of people. Not just electronic music does this, all music does it. This is the purpose of music. Find the genre of music that takes you to this special place and you are set. Dancing and creating music enhance the effects of music a lot. If electronic music doesen't do it for you, find the style that does. :sun:

Exactly.  What are you listening to?  Like all genres, there is good and bad music.  Name the type of music you like and you'll definitely get some good answers.

think about a drum circle. its a buncha people making beats that come together on the one.
tekno is the same idea, if you can get past the idea that music has to come from a string or such vibration tool a huge world of music will open up to you. its not all 4/4, its not all fluffy, its as wide and open as your mind will allow.

I would have to agree that I just like the tempo style and rhythm speed.

However a very easy thing to love is the textures in the music. The instruments that don't really exist outside of the electronic world can sound very memorable in the hands of the right artist. Plus, when they get a great harmony going on a breakdown, it's just hard not to enjoy for me. It's just generally a positive sound.

i just find that electronical music doesnt reach the musical quality or vastness in style and depth then music made by actual instruments. I've really just heard a bunch of Shpongle albums a few times while tripping that my friends are into.

Generally, you're correct (sorry geeks and dance freaks), although some of the most unique and creative music out there is electronical. Case in point, check out Aphex Twin: "Come To Daddy".

Definitely give Autechre - LP5 a listen, sober or tripping. If you don't hear/see the pure mind-blowing genius of it sober, then give it a listen whilst tripping. If you don't see anything in electronic music after hearing LP5 tripping...no further comment.

My favorite album of ALL time.

It's all abour finding a genre that you like. I can't really listen to much trance, but I love IDM like Autechre, BoC, and Casino vs. Japan.

Any type of psy-trance is a wave. It is not music for the heart, it is music for your neurotransmitters, for your luminous fibers, music for your brain. I swear every time I hear psy-trance anywhere, it just locks me in. I just want to clear some ground and start dancing.

It's like some subconscious hypnotic reaction. Every time I hear trance - bam! I transcend like 5 consciousness levels.

Psy-trance parties are great too. You dont have to go on any drug at all, but just feed off of the energy of power in the air and surf the waves of sound.

I hate when people say that. What if a person doesnt trip often, but wants to expand their mind?

Yes, this music is great to listen after you've already tripped several times, but it is also awesome to listen to stoned, or sober. Personally, I listen to it sober all the time.

The thing with tripping and electronic music, is that most of us are too dense to realize that there's a whole another world out there that we're too dumb too see. So we need something to take us by our brain, grip it out of our skulls, and toss it in the realms of the universe for a few hours. Only then, can you sit there, dumbfounded, wondering what the fuck you were thinking to not do this before.

But the Teonanactl or Mescalito, or DMT elves can only teach you so much, and they retaliate if you bother them too much. If you think that only whilst tripping can you achieve that transcedental mentality - you're only fooling yourself into a hadicap.

Hence the music is our ally to transcend to a higher plane.

Get it?

Obviously you haven't heard enough electronic if you think it can't have the depth of an acoustic instrument. Check out some squarepusher and tell me about depth. Or prefuse 73, or aphex twin, boards of canada, or the orb, telefon tel aviv, mum, Autechre, boom bip, venetian snares, gasman, the black dog, four tet, xela, apparat, isolee, cassetteboy, Daedalus, Secret Mum, aoki takamasa, qunintron and miss pussycat ... I could go on..., what I just listed is some of the most indepth and technically complex, not to mention often virtuoso electronic.

Not to mention, electronic isnt a fucking genre.. Theres so many different types of electronic, which all are completely unqiue. referring to this type of music as electronic and saying all youve heard is a few shpongle tracks doesnt improve your credibility when it comes to discussing music made by 'electricity'.

its ok, you just havent heard enough. you're acting very ignorant though, when it comes to music. shpongle is only good for trips in my opinion.. they make good electronic, but compared to squarepusher or autechre or daedalus, it requires half as much skill and musical knowlegdge.

you don't know anything about depth yet.. give a listen to some of the stuff I listed

try faithless, chemical brothers, and maybe nine inch nails, all good forms of electronic music i think.

Olso Ive heard an actual techno band that plays with real instruments, but I forget the name of their band.

I listen to electronic music all the time.  If I have the option of what music is being played, electronic music will be played.  I don't trip that often anymore, so therefore *gasp* I listen to it not under the influence of anything.

I asked that quetion because I've tripped with many people who aren't into electronic music at all and I persuaded them to let me put on Shpongle.  The next day, they all said how incredible it was and went out to purchase it.  So for someone to say they didn't dig Shpongle while tripping, makes me wonder what else was going on during the trip.

Thanks for playing.

Let me put it this way... U know how music is an universal language... now we have all this computers and electronical stuff that will emulate any kind of sound, based on it's physics. I don't know shit bout sound engineering but i do kindof undestand (specially when tripping) the way this machines modify sound waves and generate sounds that you won't listen anywhere else in universe and do have emotions attached to them.

Take the psytrance samples for example (although u can fin similar issues in any genre), all those tweaks and twirls, crunchs and squeezing sounds, alien like babbling and echoey spring sounds... when i listen to all of that is like if i could understand all mathematics involved and i picture 3d shapes with this music even without psykedeliks.

Electronic music is great from many points of view. You can think of trance and house like a new way for the ancient drum dances and the roll a DJ/Producer has! all sounds in most of elecontric dance oriented music are there to influence a dacing mass. Great Djs make whole stadiums full of ppl do nothing but dance.

IMHO really good electronic music requires the same talent/effort than any kind of music/instrument; specially when played live.

PS. And btw i really love the voice samples, many times from movies or interesting fragments like in Mark Farina's Air (2004), he uses a recording of a "learn to fly" lesson.

Freeker, maybe you should try to listen to some music that is both electronic and with real instruments to begin with so you have some familiar components involved. When you like it, or get a feel for the electronic stuff you can try some only-electronic music.

suggestion:

Artist: "Ozric Tentacles"
Album: "Erpland" (or another album, but don't start with the newest albums/tracks)

freeker i understand where you're comin from

i really dont like stuff like Shpongle which is quite a feat of talent I must say, but in my mind all i can feel is that it is a clever blending of layers.. it doesn't make me feel anything. it's mind-blowing tripping, but just about ANY music is.. the poppiest MTV songs in the world are fucking beautiful when you're tripping - an annoying cliche pop lyric is transformed into a timeless sentiment...

but anyways back to electronic music, well with any music, for me to enjoy it I have to feel like it touches my soul, and most of the time i just feel like the artist is trying to hard to "wow" me with his layering techniques - "hey look what I can do!"

so back to the soul thing... that's what music is all about to me. a reflection of the mystery and the rhythm of being alive and human. and some electronic groups can in fact pierce into my spirit.

here is what I've found to be great listening and a good track to check out:

Autechre - Basscadubmx
Aphex Twin - Journey(Care Mix)
The Crystal Method - Bad Stone

i think they make beautiful beautiful beautiful sonic environments

i listen to psytrance and goa 24/7, mostly while i'm sober. i can get those 3d pictures also. symbols too, anything. reading that you made me think about the actual algorthyms used to in the synthesizers and FX

for me, in electronic music (psy and goa specifically) i'm drawn to it because the possibilities are endless. you arent locked in by the sounds your guitar or flute make. the possibilities are infinite. they are ever changing, constantly morphing. you drown in the layers, you can catch the main lead and ride it while you miss the other 8 layers which are evolving also.

moreso, since there isnt really any vocals aside from the occasional sample, you really have no logical connection to it. like if you hear a rock song and they're talking about cars you might think about cars. with psy and other genres theres no "connections", its all new... its all about you. the tracks guide you through a journey. personally i think its the ultimate form of telling a story because so much of the story comes from you and your own imagination. throw psychedelics into the mix and you can see why i, and so many others, like it  :rasta:

i have to agree with the majority of the responses, theres a shitload of genres under "electronic" music. if youre looking for good artists to check out i would recommend hallucinogen, prometheus, younger brother, hux flux, cosmosis.. just go to www.psyshop.com and check out some samples.

peace

try -

autechre - incanubula

amon tobin - adventures in foam

venetian snares - rossz csillag alatt szletett

squarepusher - go plastic #01

or hell, even try Kraftwerk
(close your eyes!)

I see the patterns, and mathematics too. As someone whose just starting to seriously appreciate and electronic and the scenes its built... I find psytrance and IDM (and others) to be a bridge to the devine. Mandala artwork put to sound - I feel our minds have gateways to the divine built, and that certain frequencies and repetitions gain access or hypersensitize those gateways.

go to a psytrance show and talk to the trance addicts - you will understand.

Other thing i must add...
I believe there is something called "the beat barrier".
Some people listen to elecontric and just can't stand the same drum loop going over and over. You can notice this effect with trance music mostly cause it is all on 4/4 and constantly repeating but once you understand how the beat loops work; as a base, as a blueprint then u can enjoy of all the other synths, sound samples and all work in electronica. I guess you just have to know something you like, something that talks to you... but don't worry, electronic is very popular and it affects many other genres aswell, you'll find something. Electronic music is almost compared to digital art, let's understand it is been generated by a computer but there is human talen behind this (most of the times  ).

cheers.

it has a bad rap cuz it's so easy to make (superficially speaking) that there is tons of meaningless crap out there... with a few mouse clicks you have a beat and a bunch of crazy effects. but some groups you can just tell are crafting the noise beautifully and thoughtfully.

as far as trance goes, Juno Reactor has never ceased to amaze me in the vibrance of their sound. their music immediately evokes images of a mystic earth, human life, outer space, shamanism, etc, telling some abstract epic story

well most of the electronic supposed type stuff i listen to these days doesent have the constant beat as in goa and whatnot. its more..."groovy" as i call..it....it got the ever changing base lines that act ass groves through the some that make it sound oh so smooth.

shpongle i know uses this most of the time, shulman, ott, children of the bong, and ect.

Then you are obviously listening to crap.
I love electronic music, my favorite genre being minimal techno.

However, as much s I love techno - it is easy to make sellable techno.

Just because it's sellable, does not mean its good.
On the other hand - its rather hard to make GOOD techno.

A good techno set is rythmic and hypnotic, its puts me into a trance-like state far more easily then 'trance' music. The troy pierce NYC set (Linked below) is amazing, its so subtly changes and evovles, its like guiding your mind into a more relaxed space.

Techno sounds like how I'd imagine my brain being wired (if that makes sense).

I would also recomend checking out DE9: Transitions by richie hawtin - I'm sure it can be found on P2P networks - I've bought it myself however its /that/ good.

If you want to listen to what in my opnion - is some damn fine techno, here is a list of some GOOD DJ sets to give a listen to.

Mr Biology - leef - jumple sale (direct MP3)

Magda at Le Triptyque PARIS 08.10.05 - 75min-LineOut (mega-upload)

hearthrob - nyc mutek (direct MP3)

Troy Pierce - black box mix

Troy Pierce & Madga @ Sonar

Marc Houle live PA

Video of Richie Hawtin playing a set

Hawtin set part 1

Hawtin set part 2

Troy Pierce Live in NYC <--- HIGHLY recomend that one, its also a direct download link so no need to fuss with mega-upload and crap.

*note: I find alot of the stuff I listen to now, I didnt 'get' a year or two ago.

For the longest time, I'd try and listen to stuff by say, Plastikman and just be a bit 'huh, what?', then one day something clicked and I got it - and it blew me away, and I havnt been able to get enough of it since.

Artists I'd recomend.

- Richie Hawtin aka Plastikman
- Magda
- Troy Pierce ** One of my favorites at the moment
- Marc Houl
- Luciano - i like his production more so than his sets

Those guys are kind of the 'biggest names' in minimal techno right now, but there are LOADS more out there, but I'd say those guys are good starting points.

Also, I find that with the techno I like - while songs on their own can be good. I find that to fully appreicate techno - you need to hear it in a DJ set. Some of the things that DJs do with the songs, with how they mix them, tweak them, transition from song to song, loop parts and such (ie: they do more than just beatmatch the first and last 16 beats) can really give me a new appreciation for the song.

I also find that with alot of the stuff for me, sure - it can be nice for background music while going for a walk or whatever. But, to get a full appreication for it, I need to stop and actually LISTEN to it. Like sit there and focus on the music and give it my undivided attention - not everyone is willing to do that with music, they just want something they can toss onto their walkman and be as background noise while driving the car.

This stuff seems to require a bit more undivided attention.

hmm this minimal techno really doesn't do it for me (downlaoded the NYC set). Some parts that actually have a bassline are pretty groovy, but most of it isn't! The first 15 minutes would bore me to death on a dancefloor (and a lot of other parts too). maybe good as background sound for having conversations

it's also pretty slow for dance music, slow doesn't matter as long it's groovy and this isn't :frown:

maybe you can recommend some techno that I would like: uplifting and groovy with nice percussion! (no extremely minimal stuff like this that puts me into sleep (or = hypnotic lol :smirk:)

When I'm at a techno party they start to play this kind of techno at the end, for a lot of people it's probably their fav late night techno, but I leave after 20 minutes when I have to force myself to dance (the music should MAKE me dance!)

There are a lot of sub genres that fall under electronic music, granted a few are crap.  The one that speaks to me most, is the one that I DJ and produce, House, more specifically Deep House.

Have a listen to two of my favorite producers in action here.  Get blazed, get drunk and enjoy this East Coast Boogeymen remix of a Swirl People track.  You always listen to House loud and with good bass.

House music is music for the soul.

Oh, I should of mentioned the fact that that set isnt a very 'get up and dance' set. Not all electronic music or techno is created for a dance/party setting. Alot of the stuff that I listen to isnt really appropiate for a dancing/club setting.

But, give that set a listen next time your tripping at home - I didnt really 'get' that set the first time I listented to it, then gave it a listen while on LSD and *WOW*, and well - I love it even when sober now.

But, that set is more of a 'sit down and listen' set, not a get up and party set.

However, here is more of a club/dance oriented set by Adam Beyer *link*

Its Minimal, but has a lot more 'bang' to it, and more club/dancefloor oriented.

What are your expectations...? Perhaps they are too high or inappropriate...? Sometimes its easier to 'get it' if you step outside of it all and let it come 'as it is', no politics. I am curious though, is any music at all 'your thing'...? I mean I see everyone falling over themselves making suggestions but there is no mention of what you listen to and what you see in it...?
Perhaps it is us that are missing out and it is you that should make a suggestion...? Although odds are we have some friends here that are into some seriously analogue music too...

I think there is an undercurrent of disdain towards electronic music that we've inherited from the 1980's, which pollutes our receptivity. There was a time that even I swore never to listen to anything electronic and who can blame me, yeah right - I can be inspired by 'high-energy'. But things have seriously changed since then and I doubt it is reasonable to continue to be so discerning. People might guard against creating rules that in the end only interfere with helping themselves experience things mind expanding....

Ps: there are big fans of electronic music that also find Shpongle disagreeable, some find it more agreeable when they go it solo, from a group experience perspective Shpongle might be more of a distraction or a pain in the ass in general, its just waaaay too demanding - "Take me seriously or don?t take me".

you know, I didnt really get minimal until I listented to plastikman while in a k-hole.

I also didnt really 'get' house untill I heard it while rolling.

But now that I 'get' it - I enjoy it greatly, even while 100% sober

I'm sure minimal stuff will blow my mind while on K, but music should be good anyway when sober, without additives. Ofcoarse you need to listen carefully to and take the time for it to 'get' it, but some music just doesn't do it for everyone...

Oh, I love the music while sober also. Listening to it right now while 100% of clean mind

Obviously I enjoyed the music before - as I was listening to it prior to being in that state. However, after hearing it while in a hole, or while tripping, etc - has increased my appreation for the music.

While being in the alterted state - I noticed elements of the music I didnt notice before, and in a way has 'trained my ear' to listen to it kind of thing. I now notice elemnts of the music while in sober states which I did not hear or fully appreiate before.

Quite frankly, the following aggervate me - to the point of putting me into a bad mood and feel agitated/stressed.

- Classical Music (with few exceptions)
- Most Reggae
- "Classic" rock
- Soft Rock
- Smooth Jazz

Odly, most of those /tend/ to have a soothing and relaxing effect on people. For me, it bugs me to the point of almost physical distaste for the music.

I also have little to no interest in most forms of rock, metal, nu-metal, and their various subgenres.

I can kinda get what people see in them. However, all of the above also has great talent and amazing artists - I just happen to not like them

It always bugs me when people take the attitude of "Because I dont like it, it must suck". Just because I dont like or get a certian style of music, band, or artist doesnt mean I cant appreciate the talent that they have.

yeah i bet freeker is sitting there thinking "ok... there's beats sounds peaks and lows but where's all the flow and what's the POINT?" or something similar...

well for me the point is in the pure dance... as music it get's to me sometimes (shpongle does but it's much more musical and takes from many other kinds of music) but when dancing to some killer sets i "get it" i feel my center i connect to the beat and sometimes i can predict it and the flow does not stop (an amazing feeling) i've had extatic moments while dancing... my whole body tingled with joy!
and i was completly sober... i never felt as connected to my body as in those moments...

untill you've danced a minimal set for a couple of hours in a small outdoor rave and it starts to pick up slowly for the sunrise and reaches it's peak when the sun went up... you open your eyes to see beutifull people smiling the most honest smiles you've ever seen and you feel one with the music, the people and the world you can never get what it's all about! and when that peak continues to amaze you for another 20 minuts untill you can't stand no more and you slow down only to realize the music is calming down with you only to pick you up once you've rested for a while and you're there all over again amazed to find out your body can stand that kind of rhythem without shutting down... it's the most alive i've ever felt!

If somone let me hear, o say... "pelinpala-keep the faith" last year, I would have said. Why do you listen to this mumbo jumbo crap. Now that music, psy trance, is my sanctuary.

Listen to the sounds, every sound is unique, how they are put together, flow with eachother, how the tones of the sounds create a oneness. What I love about psy trance the most is the positioning of sounds. You can create entire three demensional sound scapes. You can make sounds be far away, close up. Its so much more than just panning, its like diving into an ocean of sounds.

The musical mind that can reproduce many repertoirs with precision is, however, a different mind from one which has neither large scope nor fidelity in retention or reproduction.

Or... Well I dont know what kind of music you are listening to, but I know it took me a while to understand psy trance.

well for me the point is in the pure dance... as music it get's to me sometimes (shpongle does but it's much more musical and takes from many other kinds of music) but when dancing to some killer sets i "get it" i feel my center i connect to the beat and sometimes i can predict it and the flow does not stop (an amazing feeling) i've had extatic moments while dancing... my whole body tingled with joy!
and i was completly sober... i never felt as connected to my body as in those moments...

So true, I've been propelled into trance-like frantic states 100% sober from a good set before.

Dancing, having a smile on my face from ear to ear - dropping my ego, dropping my pretension, just simply "BEING" in that moment and letting it all out and lose.

At the end of a good party, it feels as if you've been carried on a journey.

I remeber once though, was on E. This is back when I was really into psytrance (not so much a fan anymore, but thats a matter of taste). But, was an outdoor beach party, was my 2nd time doing E, and rather good ones at that.

I had crepped out just into the shallows of the water (up past my ankles) and was dancing away - the night was ending, and the sun was comming up. I was just dancing away lost in my own world, with my back to the horizion/sun.

I remeber turning around just as the sun crested over the tree's, feeling it shine down on my face as water came up over my feet and splashed my legs.

Was an amazing feeling. I was in such a good mood for weeks after that party.

It's a long shot but for me to get into alot of the psytrance, techno what have you, i first got into the darker side of it.  I can name bands all day but what got me started is alot of ebm, darkwave (God Module, Hocico, Diary of Dreams, Tactical Sekt, Die Sektor)  Now i enjoy alot of different music.  Anything from Covenant to Infected Mushroom.  (Check out Terranoise!)

I only see cold synths and dugital sounds that suck personally....unless it's music by Nash the Slash or Kraftwerk.......I prefer psychedelic music :):)

Love that type of shit, good vibes in electronic theme. That's  my preference lately. This song bumps like hell on a good system too.

Pretty Lights has all kinds of mellow good shit, royksopp has some awesome stuff as well, and some even better videos.

The vibe. The ecstacy. The love. The people.

Goa, tekno. Free party, free people, free spirit. MUSIC!

I wish I wasn't this tired... I can't believe people don't like electronic music...
