Let me put it this way... U know how music is an universal language... now we have all this computers and electronical stuff that will emulate any kind of sound, based on it's physics. I don't know shit bout sound engineering but i do kindof undestand (specially when tripping) the way this machines modify sound waves and generate sounds that you won't listen anywhere else in universe and do have emotions attached to them.

Take the psytrance samples for example (although u can fin similar issues in any genre), all those tweaks and twirls, crunchs and squeezing sounds, alien like babbling and echoey spring sounds... when i listen to all of that is like if i could understand all mathematics involved and i picture 3d shapes with this music even without psykedeliks.

Electronic music is great from many points of view. You can think of trance and house like a new way for the ancient drum dances and the roll a DJ/Producer has! all sounds in most of elecontric dance oriented music are there to influence a dacing mass. Great Djs make whole stadiums full of ppl do nothing but dance.

IMHO really good electronic music requires the same talent/effort than any kind of music/instrument; specially when played live.

PS. And btw i really love the voice samples, many times from movies or interesting fragments like in Mark Farina's Air (2004), he uses a recording of a "learn to fly" lesson.

Freeker, maybe you should try to listen to some music that is both electronic and with real instruments to begin with so you have some familiar components involved. When you like it, or get a feel for the electronic stuff you can try some only-electronic music.

suggestion:

Artist: "Ozric Tentacles"
Album: "Erpland" (or another album, but don't start with the newest albums/tracks)

freeker i understand where you're comin from

i really dont like stuff like Shpongle which is quite a feat of talent I must say, but in my mind all i can feel is that it is a clever blending of layers.. it doesn't make me feel anything. it's mind-blowing tripping, but just about ANY music is.. the poppiest MTV songs in the world are fucking beautiful when you're tripping - an annoying cliche pop lyric is transformed into a timeless sentiment...

but anyways back to electronic music, well with any music, for me to enjoy it I have to feel like it touches my soul, and most of the time i just feel like the artist is trying to hard to "wow" me with his layering techniques - "hey look what I can do!"

so back to the soul thing... that's what music is all about to me. a reflection of the mystery and the rhythm of being alive and human. and some electronic groups can in fact pierce into my spirit.

here is what I've found to be great listening and a good track to check out:

Autechre - Basscadubmx
Aphex Twin - Journey(Care Mix)
The Crystal Method - Bad Stone

i think they make beautiful beautiful beautiful sonic environments

Definitely give Autechre - LP5 a listen, sober or tripping. If you don't hear/see the pure mind-blowing genius of it sober, then give it a listen whilst tripping. If you don't see anything in electronic music after hearing LP5 tripping...no further comment.

My favorite album of ALL time.

Good argument, in fact I'll buy this album tonight

i'll get back to this thread :smirk:

i listen to psytrance and goa 24/7, mostly while i'm sober. i can get those 3d pictures also. symbols too, anything. reading that you made me think about the actual algorthyms used to in the synthesizers and FX

for me, in electronic music (psy and goa specifically) i'm drawn to it because the possibilities are endless. you arent locked in by the sounds your guitar or flute make. the possibilities are infinite. they are ever changing, constantly morphing. you drown in the layers, you can catch the main lead and ride it while you miss the other 8 layers which are evolving also.

moreso, since there isnt really any vocals aside from the occasional sample, you really have no logical connection to it. like if you hear a rock song and they're talking about cars you might think about cars. with psy and other genres theres no "connections", its all new... its all about you. the tracks guide you through a journey. personally i think its the ultimate form of telling a story because so much of the story comes from you and your own imagination. throw psychedelics into the mix and you can see why i, and so many others, like it  :rasta:

i have to agree with the majority of the responses, theres a shitload of genres under "electronic" music. if youre looking for good artists to check out i would recommend hallucinogen, prometheus, younger brother, hux flux, cosmosis.. just go to www.psyshop.com and check out some samples.

peace

I see the patterns, and mathematics too. As someone whose just starting to seriously appreciate and electronic and the scenes its built... I find psytrance and IDM (and others) to be a bridge to the devine. Mandala artwork put to sound - I feel our minds have gateways to the divine built, and that certain frequencies and repetitions gain access or hypersensitize those gateways.

go to a psytrance show and talk to the trance addicts - you will understand.

Other thing i must add...
I believe there is something called "the beat barrier".
Some people listen to elecontric and just can't stand the same drum loop going over and over. You can notice this effect with trance music mostly cause it is all on 4/4 and constantly repeating but once you understand how the beat loops work; as a base, as a blueprint then u can enjoy of all the other synths, sound samples and all work in electronica. I guess you just have to know something you like, something that talks to you... but don't worry, electronic is very popular and it affects many other genres aswell, you'll find something. Electronic music is almost compared to digital art, let's understand it is been generated by a computer but there is human talen behind this (most of the times  ).

cheers.

it has a bad rap cuz it's so easy to make (superficially speaking) that there is tons of meaningless crap out there... with a few mouse clicks you have a beat and a bunch of crazy effects. but some groups you can just tell are crafting the noise beautifully and thoughtfully.

as far as trance goes, Juno Reactor has never ceased to amaze me in the vibrance of their sound. their music immediately evokes images of a mystic earth, human life, outer space, shamanism, etc, telling some abstract epic story

well most of the electronic supposed type stuff i listen to these days doesent have the constant beat as in goa and whatnot. its more..."groovy" as i call..it....it got the ever changing base lines that act ass groves through the some that make it sound oh so smooth.

shpongle i know uses this most of the time, shulman, ott, children of the bong, and ect.

Then you are obviously listening to crap.
I love electronic music, my favorite genre being minimal techno.

However, as much s I love techno - it is easy to make sellable techno.

Just because it's sellable, does not mean its good.
On the other hand - its rather hard to make GOOD techno.

A good techno set is rythmic and hypnotic, its puts me into a trance-like state far more easily then 'trance' music. The troy pierce NYC set (Linked below) is amazing, its so subtly changes and evovles, its like guiding your mind into a more relaxed space.

Techno sounds like how I'd imagine my brain being wired (if that makes sense).

I would also recomend checking out DE9: Transitions by richie hawtin - I'm sure it can be found on P2P networks - I've bought it myself however its /that/ good.

If you want to listen to what in my opnion - is some damn fine techno, here is a list of some GOOD DJ sets to give a listen to.

Mr Biology - leef - jumple sale (direct MP3)

Magda at Le Triptyque PARIS 08.10.05 - 75min-LineOut (mega-upload)

hearthrob - nyc mutek (direct MP3)

Troy Pierce - black box mix

Troy Pierce & Madga @ Sonar

Marc Houle live PA

Video of Richie Hawtin playing a set

Hawtin set part 1

Hawtin set part 2

Troy Pierce Live in NYC <--- HIGHLY recomend that one, its also a direct download link so no need to fuss with mega-upload and crap.

*note: I find alot of the stuff I listen to now, I didnt 'get' a year or two ago.

For the longest time, I'd try and listen to stuff by say, Plastikman and just be a bit 'huh, what?', then one day something clicked and I got it - and it blew me away, and I havnt been able to get enough of it since.

Artists I'd recomend.

- Richie Hawtin aka Plastikman
- Magda
- Troy Pierce ** One of my favorites at the moment
- Marc Houl
- Luciano - i like his production more so than his sets

Those guys are kind of the 'biggest names' in minimal techno right now, but there are LOADS more out there, but I'd say those guys are good starting points.

Also, I find that with the techno I like - while songs on their own can be good. I find that to fully appreicate techno - you need to hear it in a DJ set. Some of the things that DJs do with the songs, with how they mix them, tweak them, transition from song to song, loop parts and such (ie: they do more than just beatmatch the first and last 16 beats) can really give me a new appreciation for the song.

I also find that with alot of the stuff for me, sure - it can be nice for background music while going for a walk or whatever. But, to get a full appreication for it, I need to stop and actually LISTEN to it. Like sit there and focus on the music and give it my undivided attention - not everyone is willing to do that with music, they just want something they can toss onto their walkman and be as background noise while driving the car.

This stuff seems to require a bit more undivided attention.

hmm this minimal techno really doesn't do it for me (downlaoded the NYC set). Some parts that actually have a bassline are pretty groovy, but most of it isn't! The first 15 minutes would bore me to death on a dancefloor (and a lot of other parts too). maybe good as background sound for having conversations

it's also pretty slow for dance music, slow doesn't matter as long it's groovy and this isn't :frown:

maybe you can recommend some techno that I would like: uplifting and groovy with nice percussion! (no extremely minimal stuff like this that puts me into sleep (or = hypnotic lol :smirk:)

When I'm at a techno party they start to play this kind of techno at the end, for a lot of people it's probably their fav late night techno, but I leave after 20 minutes when I have to force myself to dance (the music should MAKE me dance!)
