closet heat
    #5139266 - 01/04/06 03:14 PM (18 years, 3 months ago)

heyah. I just bought the following heater:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d...133032%3A133026

anybody else try this heater? If i leave it on temp cntrl, the tempreture will rise up and down within 25 degrees, wich means the heat can go up as high as 95 before this thing shut's off. On the timing mode, the lowest setting is 1 hour, that thing get's my closet to about 95 degree's in an hour

So basically your temp would fluctuate from 70 to 95? That seems like a pretty big range. The low of 70's not bad, but the high of 95 could stunt growth.

i think he means he has control of it, and can raise/lower it within a 25 degree range..

Take that thing back and pick this one up at Home Depot.

I use this heater in my closet for incubation and it keeps the temps right on the money. You just have to play with the temperature setting until it's right where you need it. Shuts off automatically and is reliable. Cost is about $35.00.

thX wronguy, i'll see if i have thew reciept to return it...LOL

the problem with this one is that it doesnt maintain a constant heat, and certainly not within desirable perameters. Also it can't be used with a regular timer.

Wronguy, does this heater remain on full time? or does it turn on/off with the room temp?

The heater turns off when the built-in thermostat has reached the set temperature. The temperature control is based on a dial marked with blue and red, as opposed to a number. Like I said, you have to play with it for a few hours to find out the setting you want it on. I used my thermometer pen to set it where I needed it.

Once it's set, it's set. It will only come on when it needs to. Very quiet also. Just make sure you can close the closet door or it will keep running until the entire room is that temp. It's very nice to have in the winter, especially when you get to put on some nice toasty clothes in the morning.

All i can say is, beware of using space heaters. Sometimes in the winter, you have to do something... one of the few mistakes i made in the beginning of my growing experience was using space heaters AND trusting jobless-stoner roommates to make sure the "room" doesn't get TOO HOT. needless to say, jars and cakes CAN get too hot and stop growing/die. in my experience of mistakes, it's easier to deal with them being TOO COLD and growing slow than it is to bake em to death. you also have to consider extra heat + dry air is going to leach alot of moisture from your babies.

if you HAVE to use a space heater, use a small one and keep it on an ON/OFF cycle so it doesnt get a chance to stay on too long.

good luck.

Having a space heater in your room is always a safety concern, but trusting a stoner roommate to handle your grow operation is probably the bigger concern. The ceramic space heaters are not near as dangerous as the coil ones. They all have tip sensors and immediately shut down when tipped over. The ceramic heater, as I've pictured in my prior post, does get hot, but the grille is fairly protective and wouldn't do much more than melt whatever it comes into contact with.

Pretty safe in my experience. Hang on, I'll go tip it over and see if it starts a fire.

yeah, but, this was almost 7 years ago, which would've made me just out of high school. we didnt have much $$$ and the antique beast os a space heater we had didnt have a thermostat. since i had a job my roommies tried to keep a handle on it in the grow room. bad situation all around since we didn't have heat in the rest of the house. I guess the moral is: sometimes you just cant grow shrooms w/ what ya got.

all i meant to say is, use a timer to set it on an on/off cycle. if it has a built-in tempstat you should be fine as long as you keep it on a low setting.

BOH!
