Liquid Growth Media (malt)

I recently tried the tek using a malt solution as substrate for culturing mycellium growth. Everything went according to plan, except, I've noticed an unexpected developement of CO2 exchange near the top of the solution. Is this a normal part of the growth process or a possibility of contamination by wild yeast? Also, most methods I've seen give little in the way of expected time frames for the process from inoculation to completion.

The top should have been sealed. And it ussually takes about a week to get some thick growth after agitating a couple times.

Well, there is the hole in the top (loosely covered in foil, all pressure sterylized) as prescribed in http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/7996. I've kept it in a 3 qt pressure cooker with the release valve shut, and hosed it down with lysol after opening to aggitate. By sealed did you mean, "sealed" sealed, as in a solid lid screwed tight for anarobic growth?

My favorite shot of liquid culture. (and I did it)
Its Psilocybe Cyan Mycelium.

Hmm, you did follow the tek... but it's not good to have open holes, foil or not. There are several different ways to make air proof LC jars.
Here's what I do: journal entry with polyfil, RTV sealant, and vacuum tubing.
Apparently what you're doing has worked for someone, it would worry me though. That must be a somewhat older tek, just goes to show how much progress the community has made.

Nice picture. Natural light, I'll have to remember that next time I try to take pics of LC.

hey, it looks like you have zero particulate in your solution. How do you prepare it?

Simple. 4cc's Corn Sryup, 96cc's water.
The water is hot when it mixes with the corn syrup.
But if you cook to long in the PC thats were you get problems. 20 minutes, 30 at max. I usually land somewhere between.
Broken glass at the bottom is usefull.

haha, I've been using straw and malt/destrose. Don't know why I haven't tried it yet, I have some in the cabinet.
So is that jar finished, or did you let it colonize further?

Great, thanks for the advice. So, I guess the optimal approach would be injecion through a airtight seal. As far as gas interchange goes though, is the CO2 produced by mycelium growth roughly equal to the air consumed from the jar's headspace, thus evening out?

Thanks for the advice. So, the best method is injection through an airtight seal. But, as for gas production/exchange, is the CO2 produced by growth about equal to the air availible in the jar's headspace, thus evening out?

No, that's what the tube is for. The pic doesn't show it, but you stuff a wad of polyfil in the tip of the tube and your air exchange is filtered through the polyfil.

The tube is used to keep the polyfil away from the jar so it doesn't get wet.

How is the right Water/malt ratio when doing LC. Is it possible to do it without dextrose? (or where should one be able to get pure dextrose?)
Oh and the only kind of malt I could find is not in powedered form but sirup-y and also not perticularly light colored... crap.. can that work?
EDIT.. and on another note. in my country (somewhere in europe) they don'T have karo or any other korn sirup anywhere... would maple sirup work as well? In what ratios... thanks

Dextrose is simply corn sugar. For your mixture one of the best is 2% dry malt extract and 2% dextrose(corn sugar). This should give a mighty clear mixture if filtered and if not it will still work great...

"How is the right Water/malt ratio when doing LC." -96% water 4% nuts
"Is it possible to do it without dextrose? (or where should one be able to get pure dextrose?" -Yes see Honey Tek or Kayro Tek
Oh and the only kind of malt I could find is not in powedered form but sirup-y and also not perticularly light colored... crap.. can that work? -Yes it can still work, at such small % diff between DME and liquid Malt Extract is at the same percentage 94% water to 6% nuts(malt, dextros, honey, kayro...)
EDIT.. and on another note. in my country (somewhere in europe) they don'T have karo or any other korn sirup anywhere... would maple sirup work as well? In what ratios... thanks -Yeah it would prob work...

Not so sure about imitation maple syrup - but the 'real' stuff should be ok. And 'real' vanilla essence works well, but honey is just pure and simple.

Not saying real maple syrup won't work since I haven't tried it. But I was reading the other day that it is almost pure sucrose (same as cane or beet sugar). Sucrose is not supposed to support mycelium growth as well as dextrose (glucose). I do have a gallon jug of real maple syrup in my fridge, though. Hmmmm......, might have to test the authorities on this one, maybe just a little added potato juice for nutes.
