Dunk and Roll Cakes
    #5131909 - 01/02/06 04:25 PM (18 years, 1 month ago)

Alright, so we all know that rolling a cake in vermiculite allows for a more even pinset. Yet I've seen many pictures with cakes only having vermiculite on the sides, or only on the top. I've seen great results from many different methods, and am wondering what YOU prefer.

Dunk and then roll all over with vermiculite. Place cake in lid that is filled with moist verm. Put spoon or two of verm on top of cake. The cake should look all brown with verm then mist the fuck out of it.

Exactly, make sure your perlite isn't WET with standing water on the bottom. Mine was like that and shit got messy fast.

I roll the entire cake in vermiculite. Top, Bottom, Sides. Works wonders for me.

I only started this thread because I have some rolled cakes pinning as unevenly as ever; mostly from the bottom near vermiculite filled lid. Now you say you also add a spoonfull of verm on top of the cake? This is in addition to it already being rolled on top?

IMO, rolling isn't neccessary at all. Dunk for close to 24 hours, get the excess water off with a clean paper towel and put the cake in your FC. Humidity, fanning and temps are way more important then how you put verm on your dunked cake.

I prefer just crumbling cakes if im going to do cakes at all. If you crumble your cakes and case them or just leave them crumbled, you get a way better yield.

I like to dunk my cake in milk and roll it in my mouth. It softens it up and really brings out the flavour. Chocolate's my favorite.

Foo, what is your opinion on using drinking straws to provide water to cakes? If a cake (or case) has a constant supply of water will it keep flushing without dunking?
