Dust and germs
    #5130574 - 01/02/06 09:49 AM (16 years, 26 days ago)

Im getting ready to try my first grow using the jar with rice substrate method, Now when reading how important it is to make sure no dust or germs gets in and ruins the batch how come in pictures of fully grown shrooms they are just sitting out not covered with anything?

are shrooms prone to germs and dust only when they are starting out?

the myc is not what you have to worry about. it is the uncolonized substrates nutrients that the contaminants want and thrive on. once completely colonized the mycelium has its own defenses to keep contams at bay.

Yes. You still want to be as clean as possible though throughout every process.

For a while I was seeing all kinds of contams. Had to  get rid of all carpet and bleached the entire place top to bottom. Then I started seeing good grows. GL

although as mentioned before, after full colonization of your substrate its less likely to get contams for the acception of after the first and second flush, usually u'll find some cakes that grew contams. this is highly due to the mycelium network growing weak. depending if your useing perlite/or a humidifier or hand spraying, add a cap full of peroxide to the water to help clean the inside of your grow tank. also read up on the bleach or peroxide treatement for cakes that have been contammed. i've saved quite a few cakes by dunking in a bleach solution. alot of controvercy seems to come into play with bleach. for all u skeptics out there. bleach is in your drinking water, so stop crying. 1 part bleach to 100 parts water isnt going to kill you, not to mention 99 percent of it evaperates. just some food for thought.

Nor will it kill molds.  Bleach kills mold spores, but not live mycelium.  I've dipped clones into a ten percent bleach solution to kill bacteria, but it's worthless against fungi.
