Building A PC...

Sooo Im building a PC.
Should I go with AMD or Intel?
Is their a site that lets you customize your parts but sorts the parts to whats compatable? I remember a site a while ago that let you pick things in order of whats important and would take out options that wouldnt fit automaticaly.
Such a thing still exist?
P.S. Lana I Still Love You.

Intel Vs. AMD http://www.epinions.com/cmhd_Peripherals-Processors-Topics-2
I like AMD. More bang for the buck in my opinion.

Indeed, you usually get more bang for the buck with AMD. What I usually do is start with a buyer's guide, then change whatever parts I feel are appropriate.
Here's one: http://www.sharkyextreme.com/guides/MVGSBG/article.php/3569696 (Look in the "Guides" section of their site for more of those, in case you have a higher budget or whatever.)
Here's another one: http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=2563 Looks like anandtech's guides are a little outdated at the moment, though.

Thanks... Yah, Im thinking of AMD first off because Ive never had one. Second because I want to see first hand how much better it is..
Im interested in a HIGH processing power PC and Ive already got an M-Audio Studio sound card, video will just be OK but good enough for Tony Hawks older games. Add a gig of ram and Ive got my perfect audio editing machine...

Ok, if you want to put lots of money into a really high end system, you'd go with this guide instead: http://www.sharkyextreme.com/guides/MHGSBG/article.php/3567566

AMD has been ahead of Intel for years now, there prices are just starting to match Intel's. I'd still go with AMD, you just cant beat the internal memory controller of the 64bit chips. x2 64 bit is even better, something Intel has yet to reproduce. Basically the instruction path (now 64 bits wide) to the CPU is DOUBLED, along with 2x as much TRUE multitasking power (since the chip has 2 cores), and its internal memory controller capable of 2000mhz with dual channel DDR500.
Im guesssing the x86 chip mainstream we have seen since the early x86 based CPUs will soon be replaced. There is no longer room for faster speeds with the current CPU architecture, cell based CPUs have been introduced and have a promising plausible future ..... of course no one knows for sure, there are a lot of ideas floating around.

Cant go wrong with AMD, great price and performance. I think an x2 3800+ would be more than enough for your needs plus you can overclock it to reach higher speeds easily.
DFI Ultra D is a really good motherboard
If you doing any kind of editing you should go 2gb of memory, it's kind of cheap these days, the cheapest performance set are the G.Skill Pc4000 and Crucial Value is ok for a lower end set.
For video card get a 6800GS, they perform nicely and have a great price.

it seems like a lot of people here don't like tomshardware, but they have a CPU chart that they keep updated. You can select off a list and compare the processors and how they did in certain benchmarks.

So? We're building personal computers, not workstations or servers.

Opterons are good for personal PC's too. They are cheap and can be overclocked huge.

This will be for recording and music editing.
I use my laptop right now but I got an M-Audio sound card with all the digital and analog bells and whistles. My laptop is OK but I need all sorts of connectors and adapters for my external SC to match my equipment and my software isnt made for my hardware.
Its time to get a dedicated machine with everything I need with straight connections from my music equipment to my sound card and direct communication with the software.
I figure I can get something real nice for $1000 but Im shooting for $800.
My biggest concern though is buying something that dont work with the rest of the stuff I buy. Like a HD that wont work with the Motherboard for example.
Oooh yah.. Toms Hardware is a great site.

we'll help you. the best thing is to start with the amount of money you would like to spend. then start adding parts here that you are liking and we will tell you if it is compatable.

opterons are extremely high in price at the moment and rare to find, their not even worth the extra 80 to 90 dollars their being marked up
