Canning jars

I could only find 2 canning jars of 500 ml and 1 of 750 ml. I am a complete newbie and wanted to follow the PF tek but they are using 250ml canning jars. I would like to use vermiculite and brown rice. Does anyone know a good dosage for having a good mixture of vermiculite/brown-rice/water using 500 ml and 750 ml canning jars ? I have some perlite at home but i would like to know if i can already try using it in my mixture or if i need to follow exactly the PF-Tek ?

Follow the Tek as close as you can. Use the measurements listed in the tek but you will have to do it 2 or 3 times until your jar is full.

I've read that it was not good to put more than 42 gr of brown rice in any size of cakes. So should i put 42 gr of brown rice + the rest with vermiculite and water ? thanks

where the fuck did you read that? did you take into consideration the size of the cake, because who ever wrote that probably didn't? if i wanted to make a cake the size of a large house i would want to use a lot more than 42g of BRF. also larger cakes take more time to colonize. and the length of colonization/volume isn't a simple line...also amount of innoculant will also give differnt colonization times as well as number of innoculant points and location of the innoculant points. also what punk420 said, 2x the size of the jar, 2x the substrate plus a little more, etc..etc.. (you should keep the verm layer the same depth) peace, ar393

For sure it surprised me but as i told you i am a novice. I am french and it seems that the translation of the PF-Tek is not correct ( http://www.fanaticus.com/french.htm ): " Si vous utilisez des pots plus grand qu?un quart de litre, la formule du substrat PF doit ?tre chang?e ( plus de vermiculite et d?eau. 62 ml de farine de riz brun semble ?tre la quantit? maximum. ) " Thanks for your answer.

You can use the 1 pint jars....Just takes longer to colonize. Plus you will need to use more spores per jar. 2cc or more per jar...instead of 1cc of spore water. Just follow the PF-Tek and make more substrant. I make mine with 3 cups of Verm, 1 cup of brown rice flour, and 1 cup of water. If you would like to buy some 1/2 pint jars online. I happen to have the url. Kitchen Krafts

LOTS of people use pint jars. the only problem is sometimes the outer surface is colonized and the inside isn't done. *or* only one side of the cake will be fully colonized and start to pin, leaving you with a cake that has mushrooms on one side and exposed cake on the other side. like roadkill said, just use more spore solution per pint cake.......this is why i like my syringes Dark!
