Barley - Short term increase
    #5128256 - 01/01/06 07:31 AM (18 years, 4 months ago)

After reading several posts concerning the increase of potency of carpophores by adding the correct precursors to a substrate, I've come to the conclusion that tryptamine is the only valid indole which can be synthesised, to produce an increase in psilocin, which also implies the consumption of the mushrooms should be in short-terms only, because of the instability of the psilocin alkaloid and its rapid degradation.

Now, tryptamine has been found to be a controlled substance in the US, and is relatively expensive, so it is not the most convenient substance to acquire.

Looking at other posts and nutrition data, I belive that the use of Barley grains, which are nutritionally, slightly superior to that of Rye, but more delicate concerning water capacity, could be used to increase short-term potency because of their high levels of tryptamine, which would ideally be accompanied by the utilisation of tomato extract, mixed with water. In this tomato solution, the grains should be simmered to field water capacity, or simply combined and PC'd. This would maximise the uptake of all the nutrients including the right precursors for psilocin.

Also, if the issue of psilocin oxidation concerns temperature and presence of oxidation, could the mushrooms not just be dried chemically, with desiccants like silica, in a cool environment and
stored in an airtight jar which has had the oxygen removed from it.

I remeber reading something about using a spray which replaces the oxygen for CO2, maintaining the quality of the psychedelic alkaloids.

Any ideas?

At the risk of seeming like a crank about this topic, I have to reiterate my skepticism about the presence of (significant) levels of tryptamines in these two plants. I have now seen only one reference stating its presence, with absolutely no data as to how much or in what part of the plant in which it is found (we drink coffee made from coffee beans because that's where the good stuff is found).

I mean only to suggest that others might want be a little skeptical when approaching this kind of information, before putting all manner of odd ingredients in their cultures on the hope that it will make their products more potent.

Since few if any of us have the ability to precisely quantify the potency of a mushroom, and we know potency varies from strain to strain, flush to flush, and mushroom to mushroom, I seriously doubt adding tomatoes, barley, chewing gum, or rat droppings to your cultures will give definitively and reliably more potent mushrooms.

I do know of one easy and reliable way to increase potency: grow and eat more of them. Instead of adding supplements to your cakes or jars or trays, how about growing two of them?

If you want to read a good study on the effect of nutritional supplementation on alkaloid biosynthesis, I suggest reading the series of articles on mushroom cultivation by C.B. Gold in Psychedelic Monographs and Essays, particularly the one in V 6.

In that article he describes both how he quantified alkaloid concentration, and the results of various supplements. Here is a juicy quote:

In my own research and mushroom growing I found that one gram of dextrose added per pint growing jar of rye grain spawn produced a definite increase in the tested quantity of psilocybin. The results, by both the objective test and subjective comparison showed that this amount of dextrose increased the concentration by about 25%.

It is that kind of information that I consider useful and trustworthy, because it is backed up by data and methodology. Obviously, even data can be faked, but this is nevertheless more reliable than a single mention in an internet article of dubious provenance.

My 2?,
AE

I think you're most probably right, especially if we're looking at this through a more objective, utilitarian point of view, yet, If one is pursuing this as a passion and hobby there can't be much harm in experimenting, especially when the ingredients here are cheap and readily available, although I do take into account and approach with skepcticism various sources which have published this information which is potentially mere myth too.
