Urgent request to all experienced mushroom hunters
    #5120034 - 12/29/05 06:43 PM (18 years, 3 months ago)

Shroomhunters worldwide, your help is urgently needed!

*steps on soapbox*

There are two organisations that sprang off of a shroomerite's initiative, called the Free Spore Rings.

FSRC -- Free Spore Ring Canada
FSRE -- Free Spore Ring Europe

These two orgs supply spores on a non-profit basis to amateur researchers worldwide at a cost thats marginally more than the postage thats on their return envelope.

Spores are in short supply. They rely on the generosity of a few benefactors, mostly hunters and growers, to supply them with free spores to distribute.

This is where you come in.

Next time you are hunting for shrooms, and have correctly ID'd some, please separate the stems from the caps, then lay the caps gills down on a clean white sheets of printer paper (many caps per sheet if you have a whole bunch of caps to print and want to save postage) which will deposit sporeprints on those sheets of paper.

Next you take the sheets of paper and write on them the following information:

SPECIES
NEAREST BIG CITY
COUNTRY
NICKNAME OF COLLECTOR (for instance your shroomery nickname)

an example would be:

Panaeolus subbalteatus
Detroit, USA, "Psilosaurus"

Then you fold the sheets, put them in two envelopes and send half of the spores to

FSRCanada
Box 23045
Westgate Postal Outlet
Cambridge, Ontario
N1S 4Z6 Canada

And the other half of the prints to

FSRE
Postbus 98
6600 AB Wijchen
Holland

Remember to put on enough postage and make sure no mushroom material other than the sporeprints is in the letter.

If you want to make sporeprints sterilely then that is welcomed even more enthusiastically by the Free Spore Rings, TEKs are available on their websites and in the mushroom cultivation forums of the Shroomery.

But the bottom line is prints, prints, prints
These people do some great nonprofit volunteer work for us mushroom people, so why not let many people all over the world share in the bounty of your mushroom hunt through the prints you took no effort or expense to collect anyway.

Please help them out

Why is this so important?
First of all it's for the cause! These people are nonprofit volunteers spreading spores. Now anyone with a love for magic mushrooms ought to admire that. Their spores are in short supply as they rely on generocity of growers and hunters and, well, supply doesnt always meet demand. Every sporeprint you donate will find its way to an interested party. The spores of your hunt can really make the difference all over the world! This is especially true if you hunt for non-cubensis species, all of which are low on stock most of the time.

Another point is even bigger. You are field-collecting mushrooms. By doing that you are collecting varieties (and shroom genetics) which are not present in the mushroom cultures in use today. Your find may look ordinary but might have characteristics which make it superior to strains we already know! Your Cyanescens may survive a light frost better than others, your Gymnopilus spectabilis might physically attack any kind of wood it finds and your cubensis may just be a colonizer beyond anything known.

It costs you nothing to let many people all over the world share in the bounty of your hunt, through the printing of your spores which are probably useless to you anyway.

Print - ID the sheets - Shove prints in an envelope - Stamp & Send

Make the difference for the mushroom!

Im planning a hunt next week and will gladly donate some Ps. Cyan prints. Im sure alot of other NorCal Hunters would donate too.

If my patch fruits i can probobly donate some of the SF "new" species prints if they turn out to be actually that.

Thanx for posting this wiccan!

A pr0n banner on a low-traffic website will merely bring in nickles and dimes. If you see what they charge for spores its clear that they are not in it for the money.

Let's help them out!

(My post is fixed now, when I pressed POST it nuked half the text, so please read it again, its got more useful info now.
Needless to say i'm not affiliated with either, but I as a mushroom volunteer worker appreciate their effort.

Nothing, NOTHING is as important in the mushroom world as getting the spores to the people.

Everybody picks & dries! But actually the spores are the most valuable part of the shrooms, one that won't even be missed by the consumer.

Please consider to donate all prints you can make. You're drying them anyway and at it's simplest collecting spores is no prob at all.

Thanks for your commitment Suimush

They got mine. Thanks for posting this. If at any time somebody cannot find the address, or just wants information, that is a link in my sig. I post here most often, so it wont be hard to find.
They have a lot of information on their webpage, including a full list of haves and needs.

Please consider adding the FSRE to your signature too, they need the help just as hard as the FSRC, in fact they have been hibernating not long ago because there were no more prints on stock

An easy way to do both is to link to this thread too!
Usage of signature links is under-rated, many actually click them

Thats generosity!
I hope the months won't wash your good intentions away. Please send prints to both Free Spore Rings, and if you can, every single print you can get your hands on. They will all be used for umm, microscopy all over the world so there never has been a better reason to sever the caps from the stems while drying.
Subaeruginosa AFAIK has never been in stock in both Free Spore Rings and considering its popularity thats just plain wrong.

If you can't be arsed to make sterile sporeprints then simply printing sheets of paper full of spores while drying is basically all it takes, and with heavy deposits you can get two prints per cap.
It's charity, but someone got to do it!
