Fresh air info
    #512559 - 01/06/02 10:32 PM (15 years, 20 days ago)

I have cakes in a rubbermaid tub sitting on damp verm. The verm is keeping it humid enough to have slight moisture on the sides of tub. I fan about 4 or 5 times a day. They get sunlight through a window during the day. Why are my cakes taking so long to pin? Its been about 10 days and I really cant see any change in them except that they are a bit harder than they were when I birthed them. Thanks for your replies.

Fan more once they start pinning.
Only once a day until primordia is seen.
Then you can go to 4-5 times daily if you wish.

Damp Perlite on the bottom would help make sure ya verm water goes towards ya cakes and the perlite provides the humidity. Rather than having the verm use all its water for both.

If your cakes are dry they may just need time to suck up enough water to produce fruit, give them time.

Other alternatives:
Dunk in distilled water fully submerged foir 12 hours in a fridge. (Combo of cold shocking and dunking)
It will help rehydrate ya cake and possibly help along with initiating pinning.

Make sure your temps are somewhere between 72-76 or so.

Peace

Thanks for the help! Is it normal for the cakes to harden a bit a week or so after birthing?

Mine usually look like a cross between hard and fluffy. Hard some places with fluffy points in others.

Peace

Go to walmart and by a fish pump and run the hose end in there and let it go to work.
You will not have to fan no more

Wouldn't a constant supply of fresh air pump all of the humid air out of the terrarium and replace it with dry air?

this is what i thought would happen when i first got my $9 pump. but it just didn't happen. my gauges said the humidity was still good even after a couple of days. if you still worry, putting a stone on the end and making a "bubbler" out of it will constantly add small amounts of humidity for the amount that is supposedly lost throught the co2 holes.
