Coco Coir casing tek?
    #512493 - 01/06/02 07:42 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

I'm using verm/brf cakes and have recently purchased 6 bricks of coco coir. I can't seem to find a tek for casing w/this. Anyone that has used this stuff w/success plz give me info. and let me know how to case with this stuff. I also need to know stuff about sterilization and and how much to cut off a brick for a casing. I don't know how far this stuff will go, but i do know it will expand once it gets wet. So, plz, someone give me a tek!

1) Soak whatever amount of brick ya need in distilled water. Remove and place in a clean object which will fit in a PC (lid not required).

2) Sterilize using PC. (Its more or less a precaution, do it for however long makes ya confident/happy, 30 minutes is more then enough.) Let PC cool.

3) Wash ya hands. Remove coir from PC.

4) Get empty clean bowl.

5) Take clumps of coir in your hand and squeeze over sink until it feels moist and not damp. (When squeezed it should release a few drops of water, this is the right consistency)
Make sure your coir is the right consistency, this is most important step next to sterility!!
Too wet=BAD
Too Dry=You can fix

6) Do this until ya finished transferring all your coir to the bowl.

7) Use coir to case as you would verm.

Hope that helped.

Anyone has any amendmants to make feel free, I wrote this up real fast and may have forgotten a few things.

Peace

Myco, depending on the brand and the way it was shipped/stored, sterilization maybe needed.

as a ball park, a standard brick should yeild about 450 cubic inches of coir. time for you to do the math to see about how much of the brick you need.

Just do a search on the web for it, plenty of places online sell it.

McMan, you know that I have the most respect for you, but when my cat received her coir, it was in compressed brick form but it was shipped in styrofoam peanuts, in a ripped cardboard box and the bricks of coir were not wrapped in anything , and the box of course was not sterile, and i doubt the UPS truck they came in was sterile. To test the ability of the coir My cat did two casings of the outer two layers, (top and bottom of the brick) the non PCed one contammed, the other didn't. and to be on the safe side i have PCed them for my cat. But on your word I will do further testing for my cat.

And I remember quite well when you did introduce coir to the shroomery, I have been here quite a long time as well :) I was blown away by the pics of the coir you had posted from 'the cultivator' when they first came on here :)

As posted in my original response in this thread.

Sterilization of coir is merely a precaution, not a necessity. I have never had a casings contam before 3rd flush using my method.

Peace

I was at wally world yesterday, just bored and checking out ingredients on soil and stuff. I found some stuff, can't remember what it was, most likely some sort of potting soil. But it had peat moss in it and verm and it had coco husk fiber, only it was called something else that had the name coir after it. Anybody ever heard of this stuff and wouldn't it be great for a casing?

Regardless of what anyone says, AFOAF always microwaves thier coir for 10 minutes and lets cool in the microwave in a ziplock container or bag because... It gives you peace of mind and the chances of something dumb like cobweb mold or trich getting a hold are much less .. but that's just one person's opinion ... do whatever makes you feel comfortable weather it be pc'ing or nuking but I'm sure they would never go with just adding water and then casing.

Gardens Alive! has a seed starting mix which is coir based with some excellent nutritive additive that does a fine job. A nice plus is you don't have to mess with breaking those pain in the ass bricks. Buffer with coarse and fine limestone and some oyster shell.

Ithought a casing layer isn't supposed to have nutrients?
