Some questions and doubts about birdseed method...
    #512419 - 01/06/02 08:54 PM (15 years, 17 days ago)

I tried the birdseed tek from http://www.mycotopia.net/ . It was basically very simple. 2/3 cup seeds (rinsed out) and 1/3 cup water. I sterilized it and all that too. But my problem is this. At first the sterilized seeds looked plup from being boiled in the water. But its been about 1 and 1/2 weeks and the seeds already look dried out and makes it seem like it wont be colonized. I see about 2 centimeters of growth but its very slow. Whats wrong with this tek or my method?

I used wild bird seed food. Its majority is white millet.
Spawned from mycleium of Puerto Rican
Innoculated spores from Treasure Coast

Should I add more water?

By the way, the color is off white, it looks almost a pale green in the light, I have a slight feeling its a cotamination, but Im not sure.

Any in put from birdseed users is helpful and If you guys know links to other birdseed teks that are better, I would like to know where I can find them.

Did You shake the jars to redistribute the colonized kernels? This is supposed to increase colonization time greatly.

dude, its not the substrate, its the user. my cat fucked up birdseed and quit using it a while back and sticks to rye, but there are plenty of stories and pictures to show that birdseed is just as good or better.

heh, I wrote that "tek", I have no idea how it got put on mycotopia though, they even spelled my nick wrong :/ . Anyway, you shook the seed up after sterilization right? Did you tape the hole in the lid or use polyfill? If you taped it and didn't put the jar lids on upside down, there may not be enough oxygen in the jars for growth. In that case you could take them to a sterile room and pull the tape off for a second, put it back on, then unscrew the top, lift up the lid slightly to break the seal, replace and screw the top on again. I've tried using polyfill to stuff the hole in the lid a la Workman since I wrote that and it seems to be a good way to avoid the problem of not enough oxygen being available. Like I said, I've tried that recipe with a few different brands and batches of seed and never had any problems.

The recipe I use is equal weights of birdseed and water.
Pressure cooking for 1 hour, shake while still hot.

It works very good, much better than rye IMO.

Read www.fungifun.org/rye.
