An added Security measure for all members
    #5123804 - 12/30/05 05:50 PM (17 years, 3 months ago)

Ythan, this one's directed your way. I've considered the fact that our legal system (and any legal system I've ever seen) can always play by whatever rules one wishes to select based on human momentum. If someone wanted to get a member or an advertiser, the possibility at least exists. What if we had a "Member Disclosure Agreement" wherein all members sign and are not held liable for any text, audio clip, or video clip of any data pertaining to the usage, consideration, involvement, or education of legal or illegal foods and substances?

I'm not quite sure what you're going for there... some kind of list where you click it and you're immune from prosecution? Shit we could put a line in our registration agreement: "by using this board you certify that any illegal activites you describe are made up to sound cool". It'd never hold up. Same as the myth about the Internet Privacy Act. Our laws just don't provide simple loopholes like that. I think it would serve only to provide a false sense of security.

What about if a member were to have some type of setting in their options to "Allow personal disclaimer appear with posts."

And they could type their own personal disclaimer?

Why don't you simply turn off the IP logging?

Well we use IPs for a lot of things, from identifying puppets to tracking usage statistics to blocking e-mail harvesters. Remember the DDoS attacks we suffered a while ago? It was only through IPs that we were able to track them down and get them stopped. Sometimes people lose access to their accounts and we can use their IP to verify their identity. Basically IP logs are a potent administrative tool, and without them we'd be rather crippled in our ability to deal with the random issues which pop up from time to time. Not to mention that in 8+ years, we've never received a request for private information let alone a legal subpoena. And don't forget that unless you have external images disabled, people can already log your IP quite easily. The only way I can see it working is some convoluted encryption scheme with keys in different countries, so we could still keep logs for our own use. When I start to think about what that would entail, I just recommend a proxy server.

:woot:  No way, mang.

I was hoping for something more *cough* legally-with-potential.

Anyway, tonight is the night of many woots. I shall not let this frustrate my wooting.

:woot: :woot:

Yeah I know this. Oh well. I just hope your servers never get raided. :frown:

I don't see how they could but you never know. The government is doing a lot of things we all thought it couldn't do lately. Be it legal for them to do so or not.
