LC with straw! works good
    #5108020 - 12/26/05 04:44 PM (19 years, 26 days ago)

I'm sure several folks will frown on this, but I've successfully created a liquid culture with straw. Water was very clear (clearer than light malt), abundant mycelium, and the jar I inoculated with straw LC is colonizing quick. Here are the specifics:

Use just enough straw to cover the bottom of your jar (exact quantities aren't importaint).
Cut it up into tiny pieces (1/4 inch)
Add a piece of jagged glass
Add water
Allow the straw to sit for a day, all straw will sink (edit: any straw that's still floating will sink during the PC)
PC for 20 minutes
let cool and inoculate, wait 5 days

The straw will not stay suspended in the water... so when you're ready to use it, give it a good shaking and allow 15-20 seconds for particulate to settle before drawing from it.

I've already got some malt and dextrose, it's working fine, but since the straw water is much clearer, I'll probably just use straw from now on.

No frowing here, I applaud you for trying something new. I wonder if straining the straw out after soaking for a day would still retain enough nutrients for a decent LC.

Hmm, I'll give it a shot, but since the water is so clear, I won't expect a lot. something similar would be to take the water from a straw pasturization and cut it with water until visibility is good, then PC that... I happened to save my straw water from the last pasturization.

If only I can find a way to use straw as spawn  this bale of straw I bought for 8 bucks would be all I need for the next year!

Haha - my bales are $4.54.

I wonder if you use the straw in a coffee grinder and grind it up real fine, if that would do it...

-OR-

As Holydiver suggested, use the green water you strain off of hydrated straw for an LC.

I've got 10 syringes coming from sporesource, so it's prime time to test that out.

Nope, I tried and it just spins and spins. Unless I can get a pure liquid, big pieces are better anyway I think.

I'm soaking some straw as we speak, I'm also going to PC some parturized straw water (mixed about 50/50 with water) and try both of those out.

BTW- thinking back, only about half the straw sunk, I spooned off the other half.

Yeah - I'm thinking that you'll have good results with the straw water, as straw is very nutritive in itself....

If, for some reason, it doesn't work alone, it may supplement the karo tek.

Is it important what straw you use?

Any yellow straw would work I guess, I asked for a bale of straw and they gave me the "normal" stuff, whatever that is

As an update, the WBS I inoculated with straw LC is almost fully colonized, just under 2 weeks, no shaking. I've also inoculated pasturized straw water (cut with water for visibility), so we'll see how that looks in 4-5 days.

And, I'm PCing a couple jars of straw for spawn today. I have a feeling it will colonize very quickly, I'm just not sure how easy it will be to seperate it for use as spawn, but if it comes apart easy, it would be perfect for spawning to straw.

If this works I'm gonna have to change my name

I also have a few experimental LC's going with straw water....

1 is 1:1 straw water:tapwater, another is 100% straw water, and the last one is 1:1 straw water with 2% karo added.

Will do...

I got my spores yesterday, so that's when they were started. I'll be checking on them soon though!

I've heard of people using soak water from seeds for lc growth, but haven't tried it personally. Any pictures?

Very nice. That's wildstyle cooking, I love it.
"Normal" straw is like from wheat or rye, or maybe barley or oat, too. So to say the rests of culture grains.
Hay is dried grass. You can get that in a pet shop then you don't have to deal with a whole log .
