Flax discussion, to be or not to be?

There seems to be alot of speculations as to wether or not flax seed is any good as an additive to your substrate. People, have posted statements saying they have had good results, but others seem to be looking down on flax.
I think the biggest reason people argue that flax isn't good is because flax seed has a very high fat content. Apparently, high amounts of fat in your substrate isn't good, because rumor has it that contaminants --love-- nutritious fat! Hell, I do.
If this is the case, then why do some people testify that flax is a great additive?
Please reply, I'm totally confused =[.

its ok to add a little, or to add flax seed meal to a bulk grow. enough to supplement but nothing that would be a significant portion of the substrate.

I looked up the nutrition facts for flax and compared them to rye berries.
http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-B00001-01c20p1.html --- Flax http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-B00001-01c21UN.html --- Rye
Cup-for-cup flax beats rye in tryptophan content, and has just about double the amount of every mineral (ie phosphorous, potassium, etc...). Flax also has high vitamin content.
I can see how flax would be a great additive (in small amounts due to high fat content) to your substrate. Flax seed would add a good amount of minerals and vitamins that rye or BRF lacks.
I think the most undesirable trait of flax seed is its oily properties. I have read complaints on this forum about flax gooping together, and making jars unshakeable or cutting off gas exchange to deeper parts of the substrate.
I think if prepared right... with enough gypsum added... flax would work out pretty well.

if you want a good additive go with blood meal. it packs quite a punch for the little amount you have use. usually 1 teaspoon to 10 pounds works good, or 1 teaspoon of blood meal to your pasteurization water prior to pasteurizing poo. kinda like a blood meal tea.
If you use the flax, use extremely low amounts until you have perfected a set amount of flax to a set amount of substrate. i believe this topic is still up in the air.

Yes, well I'm a vegetarian, so blood meal is a no-go. Kidding =].
Okay, so blood meal is a great source of some nutrients, but how good of a source is it for vitamins and minerals?

1% tryptophan, thought it would be more
the fat content is not so bad, I have heard of people adding veg oil to manure before.

Blood meal is not something that should be taken lightly, it has a high nitrogen content and has been associated with kicking up the potency a bunch. It also has the nasty property of frying your myc if you use to much.
Just be careful with the stuff or you'll end up with a bunch of dead jars.

Update:
I soaked about 12 tablespoons of whole flax seed for 12 hours. Let me tell you something; working with flax seed is somewhat of a mess. This stuff is as slimey as a bucket full of bait fish, or a bowl of pudding, or slimey boogers. I guess you could sum it all up by saying: Flax is as slimey as a bucket full of bait fish swimming around in pudding, eating smiley boogers.
I was able to make it less of a gooey mess by cutting the amount of slimey flax seed with quinoa grain. I also drained the flax seed very well, and rinsed it very well before adding quinoa to it, and then draining and rinsing some more.
Now I have a container of somewhat shakeable, slightly gooey flax/quinoa mixture!
And to make matters even better, I plan on adding double the amount of rye to the flax/quinoa mixture.
By the end of all this, I hope to have a very good blend of nutritious grain that is shakeable! I guess flax -is- feasible! I better not speak too soon, though. =]

Any ideas on how to make flax work even better?
Because I blew the breaker 3 times last night, I decided to wait and simmer my rye and PC my jars today. I put the mixture of flax/quinoa into the fridge so that they would not sprout. I looked at them just a few minutes ago and the surface of the mixture is dry.
They -could- just be frozen though, I can't tell.

Use very little flax. IMO, I don't see it making enough of a difference to worry this much about it. Quinoa by itself is a great grain to use instead.
Are you making cakes or creating spawn?

Alittle birdy told me to tell you to use small amounts of flax seed, and to put into a coffee grinder before adding to your substrate.
