slow colonization
    #5076738 - 12/17/05 10:31 PM (18 years, 3 months ago)

i inoculated these jars one week ago and only two show signs of growth so far, and very small growth at that. about quarter size in pint jars, see below:

and my temp/humidity is always around 84/70, see below:

note, those water dropplets are on the underside of the bin.... the inside of the incubator chamber is dry.

looks like your using the PF type tek?

Your temp is fine...

Enough moister in the jars..?

A week is not necessarily slow...

I assume there was 4nock up holes

and there is a filter for gas exchange..

I see only two...

and no gas exchange..

nothing you can do now...

just wait it out...

though next time...yes you can do it differently and have better results..

I think u should remove the foil. I had foil on mines, and i had little droplets of water inside the jar. after i removed it, after a few days, there was none.

I recomend taking the foil off the jars too. I have jars at 1 week now, and the first jars to colonise were the jars with the foil removed.

moisture is not of the essence during the colonization stage.
make sure its in a good temp area (which is seems too be)  80-85.
make sure its NOT getting no light.
NO tape over the holes, it need AE.

and thats that
always worked for friends!

Cook with foil covering the holes to keep excess water out. I like the idea of Tyvek coverings (very cheap, large envelops for sale at USPS or office supply or drug stores - put the Tyvek under the band but over the lid) with polyfil in the holes in the lid. Take the foil off after you PC and let the Tyvek/polyfil do its job of filtering the air while allowing gas transfer. This seems to well for some. Lab-grade filter discs are ideal but more expensive.

Mepher- Tyvek is free from the USPS! I sure hope those bastards arent charging you for the damn things.  I walked in one day and ransacked almost their whole supply.  I now have enough envelopes to last me for a year or more and it cost me 20 cents in gas to go get it .

To the poster, moisture on the inside of your jars is a common and good thing.  It means you've got the moisture content near its correct level and that the myc is thriving (im sure i dont need to explain how condensation works  ).  If you follow the PF tek the dry verm acts a barrier.  There is no need for foil or tape or tyvek if you use the dry verm at the top.  They only hinder your gas exchange, also if you notice the jars slowing once they're nearing the finish flip them over so they're sitting on the lids.  This helps any excess CO2 escape and helps the jars finish quicker.

After taking the foil off, two jars are almost 100 percent colonized and two of the other, previously dormant jars, started growing as well.
