ubuntu dual boot

i'm thinking about putting ubuntu on this machine, but i'm a little worried about messing it up because it isn't mine and the people who use it need windows. it's fine as long as it goes smoothly, but if there's a hitch and windows becomes unbootable... that's gonna be a problem.
the ubuntu dual boot install instructions are pretty straightforward. it looks like the installer can resize an NTFS partition no problem, and then automatically detect windows, installing GRUB onto the MBR in such a way that its configured automatically to give a dual boot option. this automatic stuff is great, if it works... but what if it doesn't?
has anyone done this? had any problems? if i mess it up, how hard will it be to repair?

Ubuntu can do these things well. Whether it messes up or not is dependant on you. Whether the devices are supported is a crapshoot unless you research it. My advice as an IT worker is that if the machine is mission critical DON'T FUCK WITH IT.

A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

You can take a chance...but if the machine has important data on it and an error happens your fucked. Nothing with computers is fool proof. Mission critical machines should be left alone. If it is not mission critical do what you want.

or just backup any important data on the windows partition before doing the install, in case anything screws up.
should be fine, though

Mission critical means that it's being down for a few hours can cause a financial loss. You do not fuck with such a machine. If it is just a matter of a few files a back up should be fine.

oh, ok confusion of terminology. i refer to machines like that as 'live' (as opposed to staging/cvs and local servers).
hehe mission critical sounds a bit intense for webservers

For a commercial site a web server is the business' life blood.

oh i know. i'm actually doing some experimenting with clustering machines, with the hopes of having a server cluster. that way, if one of the machines physically dies, the server doesn't go down, but rather just loses a node.
the worst, though, is when it is a problem with the ISP, and you have to just wait it out...

ClusterKnoppix should get you going quick. Check it out....build clusters with cd-booted machines...awesome!!!
