how much lime?
    #5101930 - 12/24/05 01:05 PM (19 years, 27 days ago)

Making some more casings, substrate is one pint so the casing layer (50/50 vermiculite/peat moss), is 1/4 pint. How much lime should I add to the 1/4 pint casing layer?

Thanks!

This may help answer your question. I'm assuming your talking about hydrated lime?

However, I'm not sure if Hydrated Lime is really all that advisable for casing mixes.

Anyone out there with a little more info or fist hand experience?...

Nope, not hydrated lime. It says organic garden lime and specifically states it is safer than hydrated lime. I read this would make the pH of the casing layer optimal for mushroom growth.

You want hydrated lime because it's water soluable and goes to work immediately. Garden lime is intended to break down over several months during the outdoor growing season and will be useless during the three to four week life of a casing layer.

Use hydrated lime at the rate of 5% by volume of the amount of peat in the casing. In other words, for 20 pints of peat, use 1 pint of hydrated lime. Don't count the vermiculite when figuring how much lime to use.

I can't use garden lime? Is it because it is pelletized? Would it make any difference if I ground it up.

third ancient post you have bumped by just quoting what someone said in the same thread years ago without adding anything new.

WTF are you doing?
