UGHHHH!! please help!
    #509011 - 01/03/02 02:17 PM (22 years, 3 months ago)

i cannot get my casings to pin...
i have 13 casings in horse dung, were allowed to colonize about 50% then foil removed to initiate pinning. they are in an environment of high humidity from an ultrasonic humidifier and fanned 2-3 times daily. this is the second time i have had no pinning occur and i'm getting kinda irritated now, but i can not for the life of me figure out what is wrong...
the dung has straw and ash mixed in (it was given to me by a lady who thought i was using it for roses, she owns her own stables) they did get a little dry but that was corrected quickly. its been about two weeks and no pinning, please help me guys!

and GODDAMM those b+ colonize slow as hell!!!!!

Have you tried cold shocking them?

colonized about 50%.

i would suggest a greater colonization in a tray before expecting pins. my neighbor's cat reports that she waits untill at least 90%

it is also the colder time of year, and most U.S. locations are below the plus or minus 80 degrees that would be ideal for pinset.

the other possible explanation is competition with a competitor, like yeast. this may not be visible, but will elevate the co2 levels to the point that pins will refuse to form. from the description of your setup, it seems unlikely.

rather than cold shocking, I suggest putting some hot water bottles and a blanket around your terrarea and see if you can't elevate the temp for a few days. my neighbor's cat boils quart jars of plain water, and sets them in the same cupboard where her terrarea are. otherwise, it is far too cold where she lives for mushrooms to grow right now.

give it more time, i have found that large casings take much longer to pin. my cat once (years ago) made a large casing out of 15 quart jars, took 4 weeks after colonization to pin.

temp in terranium flucuates between 72 and 80. and yes colonized about 50% but some are approx. 80% colonized and no difference. and 13 jars not all in one casings. i have 13 casings, each casing with two 1/2 pint jars. about three different strains all colonized in brf & verm cakes but cased in about three different scenarios. all are doing the same (except these slow ass b+, i sure hope they are worth the wait like everybody says, jeez!) colonized the dung with strong, healthy bright white mycelium then when pinning is initiated NOTHING!! or even worse two little piss ass shrooms pop up for all my efforts over the last damn near two months.

tell me more about this yeast problem

Hi goddess!
Aren't you having overlay problems ? What did you use as a top layer ? Also how much light do they get ?
Try fanning more but keeping humidity at a steady 85Rh all the time.

Peace,
MAIA

i don't know...i thought overlay was when mycelium covered the top casing layer and dried out. and since it is dung it has many peaks and valleys in the top layer. like i said, the top layer of mycelium and straw did get dry at one point but it was quickly remedied with a 24 hour regimen of high humidity which soaked the casings through, matter of fact i had to tilt them the next day and let moisture drain out of the corner of each tray. they haven't dried out since. in fact i keep it where there is a very fine mist, like morning dew.

as a matter of fact there are two tiny shrooms on one of the casings and they are covered in fuzz. is this too much humidity?
and what should i do if it is overlay? do you deep scratch dung casings? should i lay a non-nutritive casing layer on top of the mycelium?
wah, wah!

oh and they get about 12 hours of light from under cabinet flouro fixtures attached to each shelf in the terranium.

"two tiny shrooms on one of the casings and they are covered in fuzz. is this too much humidity?"
Yes, it's a sign of high humidity levels.

"and what should i do if it is overlay? do you deep scratch dung casings? should i lay a non-nutritive casing layer on top of the mycelium? "
I think you have two options.
1- I never tried dung casings, but i would deep scratch and then make an 1/2 inch non nutritive top layer with just verm or 50/50.
2- Remove dung top layer and add a new one following the descrption above.

Anyway, i also think you should wait for others opinion.

Peace,
MAIA

hmmm...removing top layer of dung does not seems plausable. the layer that was once crumbled cake layer permeated the dung layer so well it would be virtually impossible to seperate the two without massive damage to the mycelial network.
how should i deep scratch? never had to do it before.

"removing top layer of dung does not seems plausable"
If you look at 3M dung tek, you'll see he changes the dung top layer between flushes, that's why i adviced you that way.

"how should i deep scratch? never had to do it before"
With a clean (sterile) fork works the best, i do it this way, stab fork, rotate fork, take fork out and mix, repeat untill done.
Do not take a fast decision, as i said, wait for more answers.

Peace,
MAIA
