Christmas hiking trip
    #5098870 - 12/23/05 05:43 PM (18 years, 1 month ago)

My wife and I are going to spend Christmas eve camping in the wilderness of  Haleakala National Park <--- .GOV link )  Our hike will start from the summit visitor center at 9780' and we'll camp on the crater floor--around 7300'. We've day-hiked down and back out of the crater before but this will be our first overniter.

Here are some pics from our last day-hike down. Hopefully I'll have some new and nice ones to post when we return Christmas day.

yours truly

What's it a crater from?

Mr. Summit would be correct! Haleakala is a 1-million year old volcano which makes up most of the mass of the island of Maui. The 'crater' not your standard volcano crater produced from eruptions; it was made mostly by erosion over the ages. You won't find a crater like this on the Big Island (Hawaii) because that island is too young. Here is a pic of my wife and I at the trailhead near the top of the crater rim.

From where we stand, it's about a 3000' drop in elevation to the crater floor. It is about 4 miles across and 7 miles to the far wall behind us. There are many gigantic cinder cones on the bottom, and those things are HUGE when you're standing at their bases.

Looking back at the area from whence we came. I marked the place on the rim where we took the first photo. You can see the switchbacks of the Sliding Sands trail on the left side of the photo, in between the crater wall and the large cinder cone, Pu'u o Pele. We are between 4 to 4.5 miles into the hike.

Do I not have the greatest husband on the planet?!?!

:inlove:

We had about the best hiking trip ever, with a perfect campsite, a glittery sky brimming with more stars than I have ever seen before, and wonderful weather. I can't resist posting some more photos, so hopefully I don't steal any of my baby's thunder

This is the view of the West Maui Mountains (which are actually volcanoes, but hey, I didn't name them) from the summit of Haleakala. You can just see Molokai in the distance off to the right.

This is the awesome lunar landscape that we started hiking in to on the Sliding Sands trail.

Further in to the trail, you begin to see some silverswords, a crazy plant that only grows in the Haleakala Crater and nowhere else on earth! The little spots of silver look crazy in this strange land.

We were passed by a horseback tour, and my husband captured this awesome shot. Nevermind the horse, look at the background! Those are some awesome cindercones

We took a little break about halfway through the day at this little rock shelter, good for napping in the sun.

... and for climbing on, for some people

This is us hiking towards our campsite, and you can just make out the Halemauu trail zig-zagging across the side of the crater wall, which is what we would climb to get back out of the crater.

We made camp near the edge of a gap that the clouds normally flow in to the crater through, but on that night they stayed just at the rim, and allowed me to snap this nice shot around sunset.

Here is Venus, not too long before she set.

And this is looking back down the Halemauu trail from about half way up. Just look at those switchbacks!

We had a simply wonderful time, and I could go on and on about all that was awesome about this trip. But suffice it to say that I think my husband is the greatest, and we will be back for more photos

wow, looks sweet guys! I love maui, when I went there we went up mt. haleakala and the silverswords were blooming (i was told it was very very rare that they bloom) I have some pics of it somewhere. You guys are very lucky to live somewhere so naturally beautiful. I loved the road to hana too, although it was overrun with people.

Here's agr8fulchick next to a silversword down inside the crater. This was taken in august, all the plants that were blooming when we went down then are all dying now. Most of their lives these plants are just the little ball at the bottom, but at some point between 5 and 50 years they'll send up a shoot and blossom some summer. They are a distant, evolved, relative of the sunflower and they're found only above 7000' on Haleakala.

Vivid- did you ride a bike down the volcano on your visit here? I work for one of those tour companies. IT's the best job ever!

Shroomism- save your tips and find your way out. We're gonna be here for a while....
