A wonderful suprise!

Sometime last year I got into botany, especially ethnobotany. So I went out and got myself some plants and seeds.

I got some Papaver somniferum seeds along the way...

Last year, general 'lameness' by my part allowed some of my plants to wither and not prosper, and some unfortunate ones (Desmanthus and Papaver) lived short lives before dying.

I had one pot which I thought I put about 8 little seeds in.
The pot had a good number of sprouts, I set the pot outside in a greenhouse, where do to my neglect, it dried out in the extremely hot weather (it was in the 100s, the MJ loved it, poppies did not.)

So anyways, oh well... right? Right.

It's December now, months later, December 22 to be exact. Where I live it was horribly cold (which is like 35 degrees fahrenheit here in California), before some rain came and warmed things up.

All this climatic drama has taken place in less than 2 weeks.

Somewhere within these two weeks, I suspect when the rain first started and the temps dropped, the pot decided it was going to give Papaver another shot.

I go out there and there's approximately 4-5 little healthy sprouts in the peat pot where I placed the seeds, and one seedling a couple of weeks old over to the side of the pot.

They resemble Papaver in every way. The only other thing it could be, accordingly, would be Pepper plant sprouts... but considering I placed seeds directly under where there are now sprouts, and those seeds were in fact Papaver somniferum... Ya know, one has to be optimistic.

This is obviously an omen from the Plant Gods regarding my worries of Poppies dying in cold weather. The plant Gods obviously wish for me to propagate Papaver's...

I've been telling my friends, I won't do any more opiates unless I take the time to produce the alkaloids myself--growing Papaver.

I can already tell, this year is going to be the year of Ethnobotanical Excitement! Last year I was too preoccupied trying to get 'high.' This year I'll get high by watching my beautiful variety of plants grow!

poppies are VERY cold hardy.

I've had them sprout in fall and live through the winter up here in washington.  through many snows and freezes.

they grew into some pretty massive poppy bushes the next spring too, early planting is definitely the way to go .  they don't transplant too well IME, roots are really fragile.  it's best to sow them right where you want them to grow...

good luck

DH
