I've been growing for my fist time and only 3 of 12 jars came out the rest either did not grow or were contaminated. When i set them up i cleaned everything but can anyone give me any advice on making sure everything is clean enough. thanks

you must do more than just clean everything, you must steralize everything. what did you use to steralize? of my first 12 jars i got zero contam, every cake has survived.

sterility really isnt as hard as it may seem at first. get your jars. put them in your sink. fill them all with water and add 1 drop dishwashing detergent to them all. wash with a clean towel preferably. i just use the regular dishrag that i do dishes with. mix your substrate in a big bowl. no need to sterilize anything yet. mix it with your hands if you want. now put it in teh jars using a spoon or your hands or whatever; just dont pack it TOO tight. another note dont make it too loose either. my batch right now i wanted to make extra airy to decrease colonization time but in fact it was so light that once the myc colonized 70% it shrunk dramatically due to lack of density and is having trouble reaching uncolonized areas. wash off your lids just like you washed your jars. put the lids on the jars and cover with tinfoil like normal. nothing really needs to even be clean to this point. actually i just make sure theres no solid residue on any material im using and thats just fine. now when you boil your jars for 1 hour EVERYTHING that is alive in the jars will die if done properly; so even if you purposely put a big chunk of green mold in there the worst its gonna do is take up space because it will be dead when you innoculate. ive found that the only place you really need to worry about contamination is when youre innoculating; and even thats pretty lax. i just get a paper towel saturated w/ alcohol and between jars i place the folded paper towel around the syringe tip instead of the plastic needle cap thing. just make sure you innoculate on your oven rack with the heat on low and tape teh holes off as soon as you penetrate the foil and its pretty hard 2 fuck up anything after that. EDIT ok i realize that what ive said goes against pretty much everything youve read but if you look at it in a realistic sense the only thing that needs to be sterile is everything INSIDE the jars. now granted once you take the cakes out of the jars; yes that environment needs to be as close to sterile as possible but and bacteria/germs/mold that are packed in with the substrate WILL be killed if boiled in a covered pot for 1hr and 15 min in my experience or PCing for 30 min. at least with BRF/verm aniiways. with whole grains you will need to PC.
-------------------- Holy shit people; COMMON SENSE! we were all born with it where did it go? maybe theres a tek out there to explain how to use it! BUCKETS BRIGADE left hand man!!!

There's this guy in my town they call 'smellykelley'. Years ago he started up the towns first garbage collection service. Now he's a bum who picks beer can from the ditches. If you're that guy.....give up!
