first casing
    #508935 - 01/03/02 01:16 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

I am about to start my first attempt at casing. I need some input as to what is a foolproof way to case. I curently have 2 pint jars of Amazonian about 90% colonized and 6 half pint Amazon jars 90% colonzed. I am going to use them cheap foil baking pans about 7in by 12in. I want to use verm as my casing layer(being my first time). Jiffy Mix isnt available at walmart this time of the year. my Question is, how many cakes should i put in the pans according to the size jars i have colonized. One pint jar per pan? mabey 3 half pints per pan? what is a good size substrate layer?

also, all this overlay talk is gettin to me, what can i do to prevent overlay? seems everyone is haveing probs with it.

last, I have 11 cakes i have been fruiting from, they are just finished with first flushes, is it posible to case them inbetween flushes?

Just wondering here.... How many cc of spores did you use on your pint jars? and how long did it take for them to get to 90%? thanks

accually 25 days for the pints and 23 days for the half pints at 80-85 incuabating temps. I figure i got about 5-6 days left to full colonization, the botom of my jars are colonating slowly.

You avoid overlay by not allowing the mycelium to take over the casing before you initiate fruting. You need to initiate fruting when very little mycelium is showing through the casing. So,as soon as you see mycelium poking through that casing drop your temps to fruting range and give them light. I don't grow mushies anymore, but when I did I would initiate within 48hrs of casing. Most of the time within 24hrs. Never had a problem with overlay doing it this way.

And yes you can crumble them and case them in between flushes. I think you will be pleased with the difference in yields from casings.

so I can initiate fruiting as early as 24 hours after casing? I thought it was good to let the mycilium colonate the casing layer for a week.

Ii may try to case the cakes I have that just finished their first flush,. should I dunk them before trying to case them?

Initiate as soon as that mycelium starts to show through. Allowing the casing to colonize for a week will allow the entire casing to be colonized and thus predisposing your casing to ovelay. No more than say 20-30% of your casing should be cover by mycelium at time of initiation. If you use an extra thick casing, it may take a bit longer. Some people actually initiate as soon as they case. Straight from casing to light. I give it a day or two. With some strains like PR's you have to stay on top of or they will overlay.
No need to dunk. You could but the casing will provide extra moisture for the fruits. To me dunking prior to casing just increases your chances of contamination.

So isis your saying that after one has made a casing with a flush, one should crumble up that casing and form a new casing for each additional flush, or should one just reinitiate pinning after haverst?
