The two most common casings used are 50/50+ (possible variations) and 60/40 vermiculite to coco coir. I prefer the 50/50+ tek, but everyone is going to have a difference of opinion. I recommend you try both and stick with what works for you.
Both teks can be found here.

I personally like the 60/40 with coir, especially if you haven't cased before. If you can get ahold of verm chances are coir would be just as easy to find. You don't need a PH buffer for 60/40, although having one can be better, and if you are worried about measuring proportions, don't be, it doesn't have to be exact.
Either way I don't believe the casing can effect potency and as long as you maintain proper PH and water content I couldn't imagine there being any real difference in yield.

I prefer a variation of both of those 2 casing teks.
40/40/20 40 Peat (pH adjusted) 40 Verm (chunky) 20 Coir
Peat is placed in a 5 gallon plastic bucket.
Enough water is added cover the Peat.
2 large tablespoons of hydrated lime is stirred into the bucket.
The bucket is left to soak overnight.
The following day the Peat pH is tested (strips, or meter).
If needed, another (+/-) tablespoon of hydrated lime is stirred in & the bucket is left to soak a few hours longer.
Another pH test is done, and if needed more hydrated lime is added, until the Peat pH reaches 7.5 to 8
Verm & Coir are mixed in, the mix is hydrated to Field capacity, 3 or 4 healthy handfuls of oyster shell flour is mixed in as a long term buffering agent.
The mix placed in plastic bags, then each bag is microwaved 3 times, for 2 minutes each. The bags are sealed TIGHT with a thick rubber band. Then the bags are allowed to cool until they reach room temperature.
I have had sealed bags setting around for a month, without ill effect.

I think another question is in order here. Cake Crumbling? Do you get good results just crumbling the cakes, and adding the casing layer, or should you crumble the cakes, add to a larger substrate (ie..poo), wait a few more days, add casing layer, then fruit? It seems like the added substrate would be better then just crumbling cakes and fruiting them with the casing layer.

Please do not hijack this thread with that question. Feel free to post a new thread and allow others to answer.
