Rye Grass Seed

Hey people. I got a question for you. I've done quite a bit of searching, but still have some questions. I want to do up some Rye Grass seed. What is the best way to prepare this? I have seen things about putting Rye grass seed in a bag and putting water in that is half of the amount of rye grass seed. For example, 300 ml of Rye Grass seed and 150 ml of water. I don't really have anything to measure in mL that I know of. Would I be able to just soak the rye grass seed then put it in a bag and sterilize it?

I just finished an experiment myself on rye seed. First, yes, you can just boil it for a few minutes, let it drain for ten minutes and you're good to go. You can also let it soak for 12-24 hours, drain for 10 minutes. But you also can just throw the water and rye into your jar and proceed with sterilization. The ratio of rye seed to water by weight is 1:1, by volume, 1.4:1. For a quart jar, that means 10 fluid ounces of rye grain to 7 fluid ounces of water. Most household measuring cups in the US have ounce markings (or, 300ml rye/210ml water). The reason for only a cup and a quarter rye for a four cup jar is the volume of the rye will more than double. This gives you a few inches at the top for shaking.
Here's the gory details for rye grain- 1 bushel = 149 cups = 56 lbs @ 14% moisture content 1 cup = 237 ml = 6.01 oz (weight) = 168.4 grams @ 14% moisture 1.25 cup = 296 ml = 7.52 oz (weight) = 210.5 grams @ 14%
The teks vary wildly in suggestions for water ratio, but I spread-sheeted over a dozen of them, and the average was 1.4 parts rye to 1 part water (by volume). My experiment confirmed that this ratio is ideal. If you decide to boil the rye to speed up soaking, don't boil more than five minutes, or you'll bring the starch out of the kernel and have a sticky mess inside the jar.
Edit: sorry, just noticed that you are referring to bags, not jars. Nevermind.

Is this for quart or pint jars?

this thread was from 2005....not 1995.
the user was a registered user at the time he posted...
he decided to leave and his name was changed to Anonymous to keep his posts in tact....and now he is unregistered.
the sad part about this thread is the link that I gave him to Mush Mush is outdated now.
seems like Mush Mush took down the Rye Grass Seed tek that they had posted on their site....it was a damn good one.
and it seems like all the old Mush Mush teks are gone now!~
