These are from 1/14.

I was concerned with the slowness of growth on the right side of my tray. The substrate depth was lower and the casing layer was deeper. I felt it necessary to remove part of the casing layer so that I would get mycelial penetration on the right side of the tray. The following pic was taken after part of the layer was removed. I hope to show you all pics w/ better mycelial growth very soon.

I placed this tray into my fruiting chamber. All that I have in the chamber is a quart jar aquarium heater. I may add a bubbler later depending on humidity levels.

I need feedback from experienced straw straw substrate cultivators.

Here are some ?'s that I have.

1) Do I have enough surface growth to warrant initiating the fruiting cycle?

My thoughts are no. I have placed this tray in my chamber because the surface humidity on the casing looked too high. Keep in mind that I have it covered w/ plastic wrap. I don't figure it will hurt my casing as long as it doesn't dry out.

2) How should I initiate my pinning strategy and at what point?

Here are the pics:

1. Yes.
2. Basicaly provide a very high humidity and keep the casing moist. Fan from time to time or hook up a bubbler, maybe on a timer so it doesn?t provide too much(drier) air.

Then wait and the things will happen by themselves.
Hopefully ;).

If you let the bubbler go through a tank,
it will probably be moist enough.

I need help, my tray is not doing well. I will contrast a pic from 3 days ago to a pic from today.

1/15 aprox. 11:30 PM

1/18 aprox 11:30 PM

After taking the first pic, I placed the tray in my terrarium. I have been misting the tray to keep it moist. I am thinking that the misting is knocking the mycelium down. I am worried and want this project to succeed. PLEASE HELP ME!

Here are some close-up pics from today.

This next area has zero visible colonisation.

I currently have this tray in a styrofoam cooler. Nothing on the bottom. An open quart jar w/ bubbler and heater. Temp is at 83 deg. F, humidity is at %93. I mist 1-3 times per day. I think my mist may be mixed with water droplets which might be hurting the mycelium. I cased this 10 days ago. I expect my mycelial penetration should have been more extensive by now.

Thanks for your help,

Joshua

The casing surface shouldn?t be colonized idealy. So the fact you don?t see any mycelium isn?t necessary a bad thing. The promordia can form under the surface of the casing layer.
Now as I said that the casing looks dry on the previous pictures, I have a feeling now that you?re misting it a bit too much.
The casing should ne MOIST, not WET.

I think you would greatly benefit from buying The Mushroom Cultivator, as it cover such problems in great detail.

Here?s where you can get the book cheaply:

Anno is right buy TMC .. you?re doing an amazing job anyway man but with TMC you could do even better... it?s very helpful has many pictures, shows you what mycellium should look like coming through a casin with optimum moisture and has very good descriptions about casings that are too dry and too wet .. you wont regret spending the money on it at all

ive been following this thread closely and was inspired to follow the same procedure using my pan cyan cake on birdseed. its about 85-90% colonized now and im about ready to take it out, can you anybody tell me how they broke up the sttraw brick? blender? hands? anything specific? later.

I didn?t break up the straw. Once the straw was colonised I just cased it. Good luck, I look forward to seeing your results.

Joshua

I just realised you may be getting your uncolonised straw in bricks. If so it doesn?t really matter how you break it up. I cut my straw w/ scissors into 2-3 inch lengths.

no no, you were right the first time, but do you think it would make a difference if i broke it up to put it in another casing tray? i dont think pan cyans are going to fit in the small container im colonizing the straw in.

I'm sorry, I can't follow you.

If your straw is colonising, why are you adding more pan cyans?

It doesn't matter what you do with your substrate before you case it. Keep in mind you need to allow recovery of a day or two after you break it apart before you case it. Just be careful in your transfer process not to induce contams.

I have no idea why I am writing in italics when I used no markup?

I guess I'm tripping now!

damn wonder where that would come from did you nuke/sterilize/pasturize your casing soil or add a ph buffer?

It?s just one of those things when one uses a soil based casing. I opened the casing to contams every time I took a picture. I used oyster shell and gypsum to help w/ pH. I baked @ 300 for 1 hr and microed for 10 min.

I layed my hay tray to rest today. Cause of death: acute trichodermy

These are the mistakes I made:

1) I did not initiated pinning aggresive enough.

2) I did not monitor and establish correct moisture content.

3) I did not have adequate air exchange.
