Case/Update 1/8!!! [Re: Joshua]
    #514079 - 01/08/02 04:36 AM (23 years, 1 month ago)

I finally cased my hay tray. I used the following casing recipe ala Joshua:

10 parts verm
10 parts peat
2 parts crushed oyster shell
1 part gypsum

waaay too much peat moss, as it tends to be acitic, you need some lime in there to balance it out. But i guess it worked, didn?t it?

I didn?t take the pH of this mix yet. I just got some indicator paper, I will post the pH soon. The crushed oyster shell is to moderate the pH. If you believe that the peat content of my mix is too high why is there such an acceptance of the 50/50 casing tek?

When using pure peat, you want 10% lime by mass to neutralize the acid and buffer the pH or keep it constantly at 7.0. Since the vermiculite is pH neutral, you don?t need to add lime to neutralize it. YOu should only add 1 part lime to your mixture, since you have ten parts peat moss(1/10=10%). Because oyster shells have a pH of about 8, you might be alright(cubensis=weeds), but it could be too basic...

The pH measured neutral (7). I will have pics of the first mycelium poking through my cased tray soon.

The mycelium started poking through earlier today. I estimate the casing layer to vary between 3/4 in to 1 in. Right after I took these pics I dropped my tray. The casing layer shifted to one side disturbing all mycelial growth. I redistributed the layer. Unfortunately it will delay mycelial infiltration of the casing layer for a couple days.

Stay posted for more pic updates.

I hate it when that shit happens.. Just yesterday I was carring some jars of rye and some cakes into the other room to case them, and the bottom of the damn tray that I was carrying them on just fell out.. Two jars of rye smashed and glass was all over my carpet.. It was a bitch to clean up.. I got my casings done though.. :-)

This shot makes me a little nervous. . .

I?d guess you had the tray covered in saran wrap? For me, straw regularly fails using plastic wrap, the condensation is likely to blame. Seems to work better just putting the colonizing tray into a closed rubbermaid.

Anyway, I think there?s a chance your mycelium has a little friend in there. . .I wouldn?t bet one way or the other, it just looks a LITTLE fungi imperfecti-ish ;)

Great pics, very nice close ups. Can you tell us what kind of camera you?re using?

I hope it blooms perfectly.

What kind of problems did you have that are related to extra condensation? At first the straw reabsorbed any excess humidity. Once the straw became fully colonised I began to see moisture forming on the surface of the mycelium. I inspected the straw very closely and found no visual signs of contamination. Please post any other advise you have on straw growing. This is my first shot at the attempt.

These pics were taken with a Sony Cybershot DSC-P30. It is available at most camera stores for $300.00, plan on spending another $100 to get a charger and battery and memory stick. I am using AA batteries now and go through a pair in about 5-10 shots using the flash. The camera produces very high quality pics from 1.3 Mpixels. I have yet to print any shots but if they look as good as they do on my screen then they will look fine. For an extra $100 one could buy the DSC-P50 which has 2.1 Mpixels. The camera has very nice features I purchased mine through Ritz Camera

What is the ratio of spawn:straw?? My troll is very interested in this since he has never tried this tek.

Word has it that the transparent Tupperware like containers with the lids allow just enough air to breath in to not have that much condesation.

I don?t use straw much anymore, but the times it has worked best I used a tray just like yours w/o wrap and put it into a larger rubbermaid. This seemed to really cut down on the condensation. . .I guess it?s going to be more of a problem as more of the substrate gets digested--producing CO2 and water as primary by-products.
The larger rubbermaid volume seems to let this dissipate sufficiently w/o drying things out too much. [as opposed to the wrap, which constrains it to a small volume, favoring droplet formation].

I?ll check out that camera model, that?s right in my price range :)

Oh, as far as the specific problems with condensation, I can only give my experiences---each and every time I had a tray of straw that had condensation on the surface, it contaminated with mold. General rule of thumb is that visible droplets are a little ocean of bacteria etc. especially on a bulk substrate like straw. Not necesssarily a deal-breaker, though, depends on if it changes the surface conditions sufficiently to give a contam [e.g. mold] enough of a foothold.

You?re probably fine, but you?ll know one way or another pretty soon, right?

Say, on the subject of STRAW TEKS:

I was wondering what the readers of this thread would think about this little "brain-fart" that I posted at this URL address-

(copy/paste):

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum2&Number=517282&Forum=All_Forums&Words=&Match=Entire%20Phrase&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=1day&Main=516393

I havent gotten many opinions about it yet, and in seeing that I have a friend that is seriously considering trying it, we would love some input. (it?s a simple idea, almost too simple)

Joshua: Thanks for this thread man! It?s looking quit awesome, I must say. We all have learned a lot by keeping up on your constant updates with pics. Thanks man.

I?m not sure of my exact ratio. I would estimate 1 cubic foot of loose straw to a minimum of 1 pint BRF spawn. The more you use the faster your colonisation.

I am selling a brand new Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-P50 digital camera. Good camera, new, never used only thing is that some stuff that comes with the camera is in Japanese but manual and other neeeded info is in English. If interested e-mail me, thinking of selling it as low as $300. Great camera for taking mushroom pictures.

The P50 retails for $400 brand new. I would have bought one if I had the funds.

I will be posting updates later tonight. I again have mycelial growth coming through my casing layer.

Here are my most recent pics from 1/12 and 1/13. As you can see my mycelium is once again penetrating my casing layer. It's too bad I was set back by my little blunder a couple of days ago.

Enjoy!!!
